About this product
Benjamin Godard was regarded as one of the most promising young composers in France but, standing firm against the 'Wagner fever' of his contemporaries, his music fell out of favor after his untimely death. Most of his piano works are character pieces such as the descriptions of water in Sur la Mer. This is a feature shared by the Schumann-like fairies and sprites of the Sonate Fantastique, contrasting with the powerful virtuoso abstraction of the Second Sonata. Album Tracks 1. Allegro Con Moto Ma Non Troppo 2. Quasi Adagio, Molto Tranquillo 3. Scherzo - Final Allegro Non Troppo 4. Les Génies de la Foret Allegro Vivace 5. Les Farfadets Scherzo, Vivace Ma Non Troppo 6. La Fée D'amour Quasi Adagio 7. Les Esprits de la Mer Allegro Vivace 8. Promenade en Mer, Op. 86 9. Sur la Mer, Op. 44 10. Au Matin, Op. 83 11. Conte de Fée, Op. 62

The Suite dans le style ancien updates Baroque dance forms in spiffy Neo-Classical dress characterized by accessible tunes and tart harmonies that take root in Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and Poulenc yet sound refreshingly original. Among the six 1930 Arabesques, a Mazurka in homage to Chopin begins with some deliberately Inchwrong noteInch melodic trickery, and eventually gives way to more than a few chords lifted (consciously or not) from the Gershwin songbook. The Fanfare's orchestrally evocative rumbles put both pianist and the instrument's bass register in peril, while the concluding Danza is a cross-rhythmic finger-twisting tour-de-force. Album Tracks 1. Ballades Nos 1-3 2. Arabesques 3. Suite Dans Le Style Ancient 4. Cinq Impressions 5. Eight Cantilenas (Homage to J. S. Bach)
