This is the tenth in the Toccata Classics exploration of the music of the Hungarian composer Ferenc Farkas, here with his chamber music with flute in the spotlight. As with previous albums in this series, the music here highlights the characteristics that make Farkas' music so appealing catchy tunes, transparent textures, buoyant rhythms, a fondness for Baroque forms and a taste for Hungarian folk music that marks him out as a true successor to Bartok and Kodaly. Some of these pieces speak a tougher language that shows Farkas to have been in touch with his times, but it is the infectious melodic appeal of most of the music here that carries the day. This album features 12 works, with 35 individual movements and 11 different combinations of performer. The central performer here is one of Europe's finest flautists, the Hungarian-Danish Andras Adorjan.

This is the third in a series of toccata classics critically well-received recordings of orchestral music by the Hungarian composer Ferenc Farkas (1905-2000). this volume features works for oboe and strings, the solo instrument played by legendary Hungarian oboist Lajos Lencses, who has made more than fifty recordings. the recording highlights the characteristics that make his music so appealing Catchy tunes, transparent scoring, buoyant rhythms and a fondness for baroque forms and folk-dances. These five works, from three different stages of Hans Gál's long life (1890-1987), all show his consummate craftsmanship but are otherwise quite different in character. The passionate Piano Quartet (1914), downstream from Brahms and Dvorák, brings the grand gestures of Romanticism into the early twentieth century. The 1935 Sonatina in F major for violin and piano, recently rediscovered, and the three Sonatinas from 1956 put a premium on textural clarity and lyrical approachability; here the contrapuntal ingenuity, ceaseless thematic development, harmonic freedom and rhythmic unpredictability of Gál's language animate the music from within. Newcastle-born pianist Sarah Beth Briggs was a finalist in the BBC Young Musician competition at the age of eleven and studied with Denis Matthews and Edith Fischer. Katalin Kertesz is the leader of the Kertesz Quartet, with which she recently recorded the four string quartets by the nineteenth century Czech composer heinrich Wenzel Veit. Nichola Blakey, viola, enjoys a busy freelance career, giving performances across the UK. Cressida Nash, cello, is a founding member of Musicians South West.
