In Rumi's poem A Great Wagon he writes of a place of total acceptance. InchOut beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I'll meet you there,Inch It is a boundless, liminal space where we can the judgments we make and carry of ourselves, and the comparisons to others. When we think of this field, there is a sense of tranquility that only comes when we are undisturbed by the shadow self and see existence as neither bright nor dim, white nor black. But as lead singer Greg Bertens explains, arriving there is a whole different story. InchThis is a poem I've returned to over the years, and I love the idea of this place, but getting there is life's journey.Inch Bertens adds InchI think the longing for and elusiveness of this field is a recurring theme in our music.Inch Field is enveloped by themes of regret, disconnection and frustration but with the space to understand that these feelings are a natural part of the struggle between reconciling the inner and outer self. The Los Angeles/San Francisco-based group have been indie shoegaze stalwarts since their formation in 2001. After two decades and a handful of line-up changes, their extensive discography presents a dynamically textural, rich psychedelic rock that has featured guest appearances by members of Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, and Snow Patrol, among others. 2021's LP We Weren't Here was hailed for it's dense instrumental blanket, where unrelenting hi-hats and heavy kicks exist alongside dreamy drone guitar.This propulsive nature permeates Field, as members Bertens, Noël Brydebell (vocals), Nyles Lannon (guitar), Jason Ruck (synths), Justin LaBo (bass), and Adam Wade (drums) produce a kaleidoscopic sonic landscape. Following their heptad of critically acclaimed albums that has seen them nominated for a Mercury Music Prize, perform on BBC's Later with Jools Holland and tour on both sides of the Atlantic, Flat White Moon began with the desire to play and to have fun. The initial recordings pushed a looser performance aspect to the fore, inspired by some of their very first musical loves; Free, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles. This playfulness became a way to offset the darkness and the sadness of many of the lyrics. Thereupon is the long-anticipated return of the jazz supergroup Fieldwork, which has been described by NPR as a Inchpower trio for the new century.Inch They are a long-standing collective of three celebrated innovators of contemporary music alto saxophonist Steve Lehman, pianist Vijay Iyer, and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. Since their last - Door in 2008 - all three musicians have climbed to the pinnacle of the jazz and improvised music scene, receiving universal critical acclaim and top awards such as MacArthur Fellowships and a Pulitzer Prize and have each individually helped reshape the language of creative music over the last two decades. As a group, they continue to explode the possibilities of collective improvisation. Fieldwork's music reflects the sum part of jazz, modern composition, African and South Asian music, underground hip-hop, electronica, and the influential music of Chicago's AACM, all funneled through a collective ethos. What does the Earth sound like? In Stations, the 10th volume in the Field Works series, producer Stuart Hyatt approaches that question with a team of scientists working on the EarthScope experiment. Using sophisticated ground recording devices, Field Works has created a new type of music in which human voices sing along with the actual voice of the Earth. Stations features an all-star ensemble of vocalists and instrumentalists, including Hanna Benn, Janie Cowan, Masayoshi Fujita, Stuart Hyatt, Laraaji, Qasim Naqvi, and Brad Weber.
