Fosi Audio - ZD3 Audiophile-grade Balanced Stereo Desktop DAC with Lossless Wireless Streaming - Black

I've now had the Fosi Audio ZD3 in my seperate speaker and headphone hi-fi setups for a couple of weeks now, and it has been a very positive experience. Right out of the box, the DAC makes a good first impression with its compact metal chassis and orange highlights. It feels well built, and the manual was brief and straightforward. One of the first things I noticed was the build quality. The aluminum enclosure feels solid, the display is visually attractive and easy to read, and the controls are simple to navigate. Despite its affordable price, the ZD3 doesn't feel like I'm making many compromises physically. It fits in nicely alongside much more expensive audio equipment and has a minimalist appearance that I really like. The ZD3 also offers a swiss army knife of connectivity options, making it easy to integrate into different systems. I tested it using USB/Optical/Coaxial/Bluetooth, and switching between inputs was simple and reliable. It delivers a clean, analytical presentation with excellent clarity across the frequency range. Bass is controlled and punchy without becoming overwhelming, and the treble is detailed while remaining smooth enough for long listening sessions. The stereo imaging and locating is impressive, with a decent soundstage presentation. Like with anything, there are some things I didn't like. One thing I didn’t like immediately upon opening, was the provided cables. I would have rather been given a USB B B to C instead of a USB B to A as many devices have switched to USB C. Additionally, the remote functions well but feels very plasticky and cheap. A remote is not standard on DACs at this price however. My largest gripe with this product is its included power supply. The power supply included is not very powerful and causes the dac to sound lean. Instead of focusing on extra features I would have appreciated a better power supply. Overall, I think the Fosi Audio ZD3 offers excellent value for anyone looking to upgrade their digital audio setup or as a first DAC. It combines a quality build, attractive design, flexible connectivity, and impressive sound into a compact package that performs beyond what is expected for the price.

The ZD3 is a really versatile DAC that has way more features than most DACs have at this pricepoint. I use mine as a dedicated DAC for my headphone listening set up. I feed via usb from my laptop to the ZD3, and then via RCA to my tube pre-amp. The ZD3 has a switch on the bottom of it that lets you bypass the volume control if you are using a preamp, which is really useful. It also has a ton of connections on the back, including HDMI, so you hook it up to your TV and use it as the DAC for a speaker system as well. I’m excited to try it out with the XLR output for my speakers as well. It has been great with my headphones so far, so I bet it’ll sound great with my speakers, too. I like that it is versatile enough that I can use it with headphones or speakers; I feel like these days you don’t get good value like this very often!
