Both JS Bach's six Trio Sonatas and Mendels-sohn's six Organ Sonatas are conceived as tutorial pieces - an Inchorgan schoolInch - to help attain demanding playing skills at the highest musical level. We know from Bach that he wrote his sonatas for his eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann. Mendelssohn is known to have been familiar with Bach's sonatas and their pedagogical purpose. He gradually developed his own Organ Sonatas, originally for the English market they are equal in number to Bach's sonatas, as well as in their intention as instructive pieces, Incha kind of organ schoolInch, as Mendelssohn himself wrote to the . Johann Sebastian Bach composed into his six Trio Sonatas Inchthe sum of all the difficulties that a teacher wants a gifted pupil to masterInch (Marie-Claire Alain); written between 1727 and 1732, they remain a touchstone for every organist to this day. A good hundred years later, Mendelssohn created his Organ Sonatas - among other things, the independent and prominent pedal treatment (each movement features a pedal solo) and the frequent playing on several manuals challenge the player in the same spirit. Anything but monotonous studies, the results in both cases were masterpieces of the highest order.

Heinrich Scheidemann was highly esteemed already during his lifetime and so famous that he could afford to have a copperplate engraving made of his portrait. During the transition between the Renaissance and the Early Baroque he founded his fame above all on the elegant writing style of his compositions, which even today appeals to a broad public. Hilger Kespohl has selected works from the comprehensive oeuvre of this Hamburg master for the present album, and on the incomparable Arp Schnitger organ in Hamburg-Neuenfelde this richly varied musical portrait shines in all it's glory. Scheidemann learned his trade from Sweelinck. Back in Hamburg, he combined his teacher's secular tradition- in Calvinist Amsterdam, Sweelinck mostly performed concerts outside the liturgy- with the requirements of the Lutheran religious service. And so it is not surprising that Scheidemann above all produced works with liturgical associations. These chorale variations number among the first great highpoints in the genre. However, Scheidemann also looked beyond the Hanseatic city's borders Inchintabulations,Inch transfers of motets by others to the organ, belonged to the duties of this church musician- just listen to the ravishing beauty of InchVerbum caro factum estInch after Hans Leo Hassler. His occupation with Dowland's InchPavana LachrimaeInch also displays an inquisitiveness far beyond the call of duty.
