I recently cut the cable and installed an antenna. The tuner in this box allows you to record and/or watch as many as 2 channels at the same time while also transcoding recorded files to smaller sizes more suitable to wireless tablets, phones, or streaming boxes on less robust networks. If more tuners are necessary just add a splitter to the coax and network in additional HDHomerun tuners as necessary. Two of these boxes would allow 4 tuners, 3 of these boxes would allow 6 tuners, and you can’ record or watch (or do both) in any combination for as many tuners as you have. The free guide provided by either Windows Media Center or Kodi allow for completely free television and DVR capability. Other guide services from HDHomerun or Plex are provided by subscription but allow for easier user conveniences.and/or ability to record to NAS or Hard drives included on such streamers as the nVidia Shield Pro. HDHomerun makes television fun and finally AFFORDABLE.

Thanks for the review. The expanded tuner growth on the network is key to enhancing your own needs

I have a Mohu leaf beam feeding into this device and it works perfectly. It was very simple to setup over wifi. I have this signal feeding into my Plex media server and it was a bit tricky to get the transcoder to kick in. But, a few forum posts in, I found the settings I needed. I had SlingTV before buying this device and the picture provided by the antenna and the HDHomerun is far better than the picture provided by SlingTV for my local channels. The HDHomerun apps are a little strange to me, but they work. The only disappointing thing is that I discovered there was no Apple TV app. I do not own any other Apple devices, so I can't use the airplay functionality. I've gotten around that shortcoming by using Plex and the (not free) Channels app on the AppleTV.

It's good to hear you got your transcoder working! With third parties it can be a bit tricky, but usually you can force transcoding no matter what by visiting my.hdhomerun.com, selecting your EXTEND device, and turning on transcoding. Also, we hear you about the AppleTV app. We'd love to get on that platform too and are definitely looking into it. Until then though, Plex and Channels are two great workarounds!

Top of the line hardware decoding which comes with own tv software and guide dvr solution is also available for fee and requires additional hardware. Well built with metal casing with heatsink which avoids need for noisy fans. Cordcutter essential.

I bought to use with my plex app. for the live tv and DVR functionality. It works great because it transcodes the TV show into H.264 and has smooth play back.

I also have a hdhomerun connect. I purchased this to help decrease disk space when I record using DVR, works as intended.

Very easy to set up and manage via Windows 10. Two words of caution: (1) make sure your devices support the HDHomeRun app (Roku does not) and (2) make sure you use a HD quality coaxial cable from your OTA to the box. Note: Android TV and Kodi support the app! Not sure on Apple TV, but definitely a no on Roku. I'm 38 miles from the nearest Chicago antenna & I set up a WineGuard Elite 7550 with the Extend and it works like a champ!

Thanks for the review! One minor suggestion though is, if you are debating between spending more on an antenna or a coax cable, ALWAYS choose the antenna. Even the flimsiest coax cables should be good enough to transmit from the antenna these days. With that said, sounds like you got a great antenna anyway, which is great to hear!

As with all Silicondust products I have owned, this one is too notch hardware. Inccludes hardware transcoding that works flawlessly, and provides direct stream capabilities through Plex. Love it!

Sounds like you're really making the most of your EXTEND! Feel free to keep us updated on how it goes, and welcome to the HDHomeRun family!

HDHomeRun is easy to setup easy to use and fun to use as well. I am going to let anyone and everyone know one thing about this product that I didn't know when I bought it. I didn't know that you needed to hook it up to your computer by plugging in the Ethernet cable from your HDHomeRun Extend Box and plugging the other end of your Ethernet cable into your computer's Ethernet Port. I found that out by reading up on how to connect this. Well now that I have it connected I am sure glad I bought it, because I am in Love with it. AWESOME Product!!!

The beauty of the HDHomeRun is that we can be connected to the home network anywhere you have an available ethernet port - main router / a switch in the attic / etc - as long as you are discoverable over the network while ethernet connected - you can view across your entire home on compatible devices

haven't had to chance to set it up with plex yet but it works great over our wifi. just wish my antenna received more channels.

It's always a great idea to visit tvfool.com for antenna info. You'll get an idea of how high to place your antenna, where to face it and, of course, what kind of antenna might be best for your location.

Very easy setup, my Plex server works better. I only wash they would come out with a 4 Tuner with Transcoder.

The EXTEND is a perfect companion for any Plex server, as all the transcoding can happen right at the source, leaving your server's resources free!

Great build quality, body is full metal (aluminum?) and it acts like a heatsink so passive heat dissipation is better compared to other similar tuners. Built-in dual tuner allows simultaneous recording of 2 programs at once, combine this tuner with Plex/Emby and a NAS and you got yourself a great media center setup.

One of the few devices out there that does total silent transcoding! We're really pleased to hear you like the build quality. We worked hard on making something awesome. Thanks for the review and welcome to the HDHomeRun family!

does what it advertise flawlessly, the native app works fine but this plus Plex and you got yourself a sweet package,

Awesome! Great to hear it's working well for you!

Great product. Does exactly what it says it does. The extend version of this box will also transmit digital cable that is not encrypted via your network. Depends on your cable provider of course for that option, no cable card needed.

I paired this with my Synology to be able to watch TV from anywhere. It’s a great no-subscription cost solution.

The Synology is an awesome advanced solution for people who are looking to pair an HDHomeRun with a lot of DVR storage! Great to hear your experience was so good. That's exactly what we love to hear!

Used this with an antenna and my synology with plex pass. Great solution!

Sounds like a great setup! And the Extend means your Synology won't have to work nearly as hard!

H264 Transcoding is a winner for streaming. Only wish this bad boy had dvr (currently using plex) and Quad Tuner but it does the job.

FYI, for all HDHomeRun EXTEND customers, one really simple option for DVR is to grab an HDHomeRun SERVIO: 300 hours, minimum, of recording in a single drive, and every SERVIO, just like every other HDHomeRun device, is stackable!

I had the HDHR connect earlier but the dvr recording resulted in very large files that had to be converted down to save on space. The in built encoder on this one is very useful in recording decent sized recordings.
Posted
Yeah, if you want to maintain a large library of content and don't have a big NAS to send it all to, the EXTEND's encoder really is awesome, and frankly it'll probably save you a decent amount on time and hard drive space in the long run!
