Gosh this one is a tough review... I remember when printers were something you plugged into your computer and they printed... Those days are long gone, so I am trying to not blame this printer. Oh, and to print now you need to submit email address, etc, to set up account, so there's that.... I'm junking my old printer because it always wants new print cartridges even when the old ones are completely full, I hope this will be better because think ink is always wet, although now I think of it I don't understand why that should be better. Oh, and this one will install a bunch of software... which is kind of an HP thing, not really printer issue. I've attached screen snapshot. I now have four separate products install to scan pictures from the device. Not including HP Smart that is, I guess, being smart, but seems to do nothing except record what I am printing. I happen to know that one of these software's actually works, but more on that later. Installing the software was a pain in the neck. The printer would chat happily to my PC via bluetooth and said installs installed and, er..., then it didn't and after five mins or so said my device wasnt recognized. I was [only] able to circumvent this by Googling install driver and installing "7000-Series Printers" instead of the "7001-Printer" that I had purchased. Also, DANGER, most of the addresses you get for installing HP printer device software turn out to be Russian bots. I had to change my credit card. I guess that is not exactly the fault of the printer, but.... anyway, go with 7000-series printer not the 7001. Ok, so now three hrs later you have a printer and drivers and it is finally happy. Time to add the ink, which was kind of cool. Little bottles of, er, ink. And I swear I didn't spill any. But when I picked up the printer there was ink on the floor. And on my toe. Which is still stained black after four days. I view it as a badge of honor.... I was able to very easily get the ink off the wood floor. Glad it wasn't carpet or a porous tile.. Ok time to print. It printed. Windows and iPhone trivially found the printer, set it as default printer, etc. It is still working five days after not being used at all [which was a big issue for me: I rarely print and the last HP Printer used to dry up all the time] Hence the Review Stars! Both kids' ChromeBooks found the printer once without having to install HP Smart but neither has been able to find it since. Fine by me, they can sort it out. In the meantime, they can mail to me what they need to print and that kinda slows them down. And the scanner works fine. Or something works. Scans look fine. I now have five pieces of scanning software and at least one of them works when I click "Scan". Fine by me. I guess I'll slowly delete each of the scanning software's one-by-one until I find the work. Or not bother, I really just want a printer. But the scan looked good. Getting even better: deleting the HP Smart application still allows me to both print and scan, so why did I have to install and submit email? Don't care. Happy it's gone. On a roll.. my toe now is barely black and there have been no ink leaks at all since installation. Also, unlike previous HP printers it prints when I ask it too, whereas the old ones would always want to do maintenance for fifteen minutes before printing. Sounds like this one is a winner. I mean really, I'm not joking. After all of the above, now I have a printer and it, er, prints. And it has already costs less than the cost of 2021 replacement cartridges in the old HP printer [suspect an evil glitch in that old printer's "need-new-ink" software, but I digress] So in summary: I'm happy to recommend you buy this provided you are ready for : software glitches on install and be sure to not add ink while printer is above a carpet

It was a breeze to install despite seeming daunting when you remove the printer and the components from the box. The printer did a great job with my IOS method of setup and printed a great test page. Very quiet and works good across floors in the house. Free ink for a whole 2 years is amazing.

After reading mixed reviews...i was skeptical but i purchased it anyway. This ink jet printer is amazing! I have printed over 3k copies and my black ink is just now at the half way point. The other three colors are almost full....the blue is closer to half. I came print 600 copies in about an hour. If you print a lot this is definitely the best choice. Get ready of those ink cartridges.....

First time owning a ink tank printer, setup was a breeze and no mess. Prints very quick and perfect quality, very happy with the purchase and always stand behind HP..

I'd used my Smart Print printer for over 6 minths with no problem and still have about half the amount of ink left.

This is my first Tank printer so far it’s working great, fast printing and easy to use.

Its about time they made a more cost effective printer with cost effective ink solutions!

Initial impressions: Visually, the HP Smart Tank 7001 All-in-One printer is one of the most plain and unassuming printers I have ever owned. Different shades of crème and grey an HP logo an interesting appliance does not make. The LCD is small without touch capability. There is a power button, two-sided ID card scanner button, color copier button, monochrome copy button, Wi-Fi toggle button, printer information button, down arrow resume button, and an X button that cancels whatever function the printer is executing. The paper tray accommodates 100 sheets of paper. The paper tray will also accommodate everything from 4x6 to 8.5x14. Finally, the high-capacity ink tanks have slightly transparent windows that allow you to check the ink levels. The 7001 was designed to be a fast, high volume office printer. Who cares what it looks like just as long as it does the job it was intended to do? And it does its job well. Setup: The reference guide will walk you through the initial printer setup. Setup took me about 30 minutes from start to finish minus the time it took me to unpack. Setup includes filling each ink tank using the included bottles of HP branded ink, priming the system, installing the black and color print heads, aligning the printer, loading HP Smart, and setting up Wi-Fi. There is no RJ-45 jack to hardwire the 7001 to your network. There is a USB A port on the back so you can directly connect the printer to your workstation. Printer calibration is the easiest calibration of any printer ever! I would kiss the engineering who put this together if I could. Typical calibration is printing out pages of color boxes, lines, and text that you is visually inspected and then reported back to a software driven calibration wizard. Some calibration prints are so small that the only way you can work with them is using a high-powered magnifying glass. HP, in its wisdom, chose to let the high-resolution build in scanner do that work for you. The printer printed a calibration page, I placed it on the scanner, pressed a button, and presto-chango the printer is magically calibrated! Thank the heavens and thank you HP. I cannot express enough gratitude for this feature. Part of setup is installing HP Smart. HP Smart includes your printer drivers, cloud services, and supply store. The 7001 is feature packed, integrates with a home or office network with little effort, and is integrated to HP Cloud platform through your HP Smart or HP Passport account. There is a lot going on here for such a simple and plain looking printer. Printing: Print quality is dependent on your content. Text prints, color or black and white, are crisp and easy to read. I did not notice any artifacts around the letters. Time to first print was just a few seconds. Not the fastest I have seen but still fast enough. Copies of text documents, bills, invoices, and marketing material with about 25% ink coverage are also very crisp and clean. Though, the color of the copy may not 100% match the original. Business documents with embedded graphics such as images, graphs, and charts were also reproduced with no issues. Excel spreadsheets also looked great. Essentially, if this printer is purely for school, general office work, or high-capacity printing then the 7001 should be on your short list. I ran into some issues copying high gloss images with high color saturation. In my case, I copied the cover of Eaglemoss’ Battlestar Galactica Shipyards book. For some reason, this gives all printers a hard time. I copied the book cover in both color and monochrome. I got a lot of vertical and horizontal scan lines. The color saturation was good, but color reproduction was inaccurate. Crimson turn to orange and blacks turned to shades of grey. As a second and third test I scanned the book covers for Battletech Total Warfare and a glossy from inside the book. Again, color saturation was good. But, unlike my last test, there were no printer lines or distortions in the copy. In the end, you may need to experiment with what works and what does not. Scanning: Scanning is clean and accurate. I had no issues capturing a perfect reproduction of my subject. The scan cover only opens and closes. The hinges will not expand to accommodate something tall like a book. The cover needs to remain in the vertical open position when scanning large objects. The scanner light also blinks every few seconds when the scanner cover is open. I do not know why. If you frequently scan multi-page documents, then you may want to upgrade to the 7301 that comes with the automatic document scanner. If your scanning needs are modest and typically limited to a single document, ID card, or other single use scenarios then you will find this scanner to be sharp, accurate, and adequate. There is also a feature in HP Smart that purports to remove scratches and other imperfections in your scanned document. I have not had the opportunity to try this feature yet so I cannot report on its quality. Finally, I cannot scan an image directly to a computer from the HP Smart Tank 7001 interface. I find this disappointing but it is not a deal breaker for my uses. Copy: Coping single pages is easy. Place the page on the scanner, press either the color or monochrome button, and then the 7001 will print out a copy. Press either button multiple times and the printer will copy the image as many times as you pressed the button. If you need to cancel the job then press the X button and the printer will spit out the unfinished page and cancel the job. Color accuracy is not 100%. This is most noticeable with deep reds such as crimson or deep blues like ultramarine blue. For example, crimson red is more orange than red when copying my test book cover. This could be an issue for those of you who require color accuracy. For example, your business is selling deep red roses and you need to print marketing materials that reflect photographs of those roses. This is not the printer that will give that level of accuracy. But, if you need to print a report with a pie chart that includes a red wedge then this printer is accurate enough to get the job done. HP Smart: HP Smart is what connects your mobile life to your HP Smart Tank 7001. I downloaded HP Smart to my Windows 11 laptop from the Microsoft Store. I also downloaded the app to my iPhone from the Apple App Store. The app gives me full control over the printer, the printer properties, the printer network configuration, the ability to scan a document directly to my phone, mobile faxing capabilities, direct printing capabilities from anywhere in the world using any device I have HP Smart installed on, secure printing, and a bunch of other stuff I have not yet dug into. This is a digital cloud solution for your mobile printing needs. This takes an otherwise unremarkable printer and super charges it with a backend software package with features normally reserved for an enterprise network. You can do remote printing, mobile faxing, mobile scanning, adjust print settings, add additional HP printers to your network, create shortcut and storage locations for files, images, and faxes, and invite other people to your HP Smart cloud. One very useful feature is Secure Print. HP Smart will hold your mobile print jobs until HP Smart confirms that you are next to one of the printers that are part of your HP Smart network before releasing the job for print. HP Smart accomplishes this by using the location services of your phone and the built-in location services of your printer to confirm you are near an HP Smart printer that is part of your HP Smart network of printers. Yes, I said network of printers. This means you can setup multiple HP Smart printers in multiple geographical locations and print to any one of them. HP Smart app also gives you direct access to printer settings such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, DNS, IPv4 and IPv6 settings, passwords, and other features including Quite Mode. Everything else: Filling the ink tank is billed as clean and spill proof. Except, you have to remove the cap of the HP ink bottles, remove the foil seal which exposes the entire bottle to your room, and then put the cap back on. If you accidently mishandle the bottle when removing the foil seal, or accidently bump it, then you have ink all over your room. In all honesty, the foil seal is unnecessary. HP should simply remove it all together. The bottle is already sealed and airtight. Just get rid of the part and the step in the filling process. Maybe HP will improve this in future bottle releases. Filling the tanks using the flip-top bottle top is easy, clean, and fast. The bottle opening has a rubber seal that does not open until you insert the spout from the tank into the bottle. Wait a minute and the tank is filled. The print heads are user installable and user replaceable. It is far cheaper to replace a print head than it is to replace a whole printer. This saves me money. This is a no brainer. HP needs to address the battery killing features of HP Smart mobile. The app will want to continue to update and perform services in the background when not in use. You can turn background service off which will save your battery. But, you will also miss out on the services this provides. Final Thoughts: This is a solid home office/small business printer. It is plain looking. The combination of the 7001 capabilities and the cloud power of HP Smart creates a compelling case to invest in this flexible, mobile All-in-One solution. The 7001 does not have all the convenience of other All-in-One solutions at this price point like automatic document scanning, smart card readers, or LCD touch screen controls. But it ticks enough boxes to put this on my short list of solutions.

I'll just start with saying this printer is very fast. I was impressed at just how quickly it prints. Setup was very easy. I started with setup on my desktop, and the app walks you through the process with illustrations to make the process even easier. I set up my phone shortly thereafter, which went very quickly, since I had already done the first-time setup on the computer. Adding the ink and printheads was also a simple process. I was somewhat worried that I'd be spilling ink everywhere trying to fill the printer, but HP has these very nice ink bottles that you put into the fill area and it presses the bottle open and drains it into the printer. It is very easy, and doesn't spill a drop. I also appreciate the added precision of the alignment process that checks it's work after you print the alignment page, by having you put it on the scanner so the printer can double-check itself. Pretty smart stuff. You can also set the printer to receive print requests from anywhere online, as long as you have the HP app. This is actually great for us, since we have 3 different WiFi networks that we use, and we don't have to make sure that we're on the same one as the printer to be able to print things. There's also a unique feature that allows you to set stuff to be picked up only when your close with your bluetooth device (like your phone) that verifies it's you. Definitely a cool idea, especially if you're printing anything with sensitive information. Overall, this printer is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a smart, fast and easy to use printer. It also seems like it will be much more economical using the ink refills rather than cartridges as well.

A pretty hefty printer/scanner/copier tri-combo that offers faxing through an HP service. This is something like my 3rd printer review and every time I get a new brand, I see the differences - both good & meh. TL;DR for my frequent readers and details below. Pros: Lots of printing Crisp prints Crisp scans (via HP Smart App) Multi OS use (iOS, Android, Windows, Mac) Cons: Small screen isn’t back-lit Long and cumbersome setup Mandatory ‘power off’ after 2 hours - unable to be configured otherwise (firmware fix soon maybe?) Meh: Have to power it on before every use Ink bottle refills could be a problem for those with dexterity issues Special Handling Instructions Setup: Unwrapping all the components that were protected during shipment is common for new printers. One of the interesting parts for this printer were the ink tubes that I had to pour ink into ‘tubs’ of sorts, instead of using cartridges. Then, I saw - there were cartridges too! So, we had 4 bottles (see pic) and 2 cartridges (see pic). Using the HP Smart App on an Android phone, it walked me through the setup, each step of the way because I didn’t want to ‘wing it’ and screw something up. After around 30 minutes of setup, I was ready to start printing. First on the list to print from, was iOS. I loaded the App on a 2019 iPad and got to playing. Easy printing from within Gmail and Chrome. Whether it was single or double sided, the ink dried quickly and no messes encountered. Next, a Chromebook - no problem there & Google docs print-outs for homeschooling went without a hitch. Adding the printer in Windows10 auto (with permission) installed the HP App so I could manage the functionality without a web browser. One thing I got used to with another brand was auto-wake-on-print. It powered off after 2 hours but would turn itself on when it got a print job; that’s not the case here. After installing it, I can only imagine that a firmware update happened that locked the printer up, because it had to have the plug pulled as no button pushes would wake it up; thankfully in the week I’ve been using it, it only happened once. A down-side to it, was I was working in dim light and the screen doesn't have a back-light, so I had to get a flash light to see the status on the screen that seemed to be frozen. Scans were great, nice and crisp. I even scanned a box of my latest favorite earbuds (that you can get here at Best Buy) which required the lid to be open; uncropped and attached to the review. Do I recommend it? Sure! Do the Cons/Meh really detract from the review? Nah, it’s more to let you know my feelings - it doesn’t take from functionality or quality.

I have been a long time HP fan and user. Setup was easy after I had a snafu at the beginning. Will explain later. Use of Android app took about 15 mins to setup. Mobile printing was a snap. Will gripe about their mobile printing later as well. Speed of printing was good. I spit out 2 or 3 - 8x10 photos for my kid for fun and it barely.made a dent in the ink. So here are my 2 gripes. 1) Printer came with carriage head jammed. It was saying E4 code which was paper jam with no paper. I called tech service and within 20 seconds and figuring out what happened and I jammed the head. I told HP tech service they should put better shipping controls on the carriage so if shipper drops i, it won't get stuck. 2) HP mobile printing is hot and cold.... It works then it does not work on Android. I suspect that it is because not Android app having issues with updates and security patches but it has been frustrating on that end. When it works it's great, when it does not it is not good. So if HP can just get this to be fixed permanently I would give it 5 stars. But because I have had this problem more than once in recent previous products. I can't.

Was looking for printer that used bottle refills to save on price of ink and had ablity to print on both sides of page. Found it easy setup and great quality print. I would recommend choosing this printer.

Overall a great printer. The 1st was defective and as a Total Tech member, I had an on-site visit which confirmed this. I exchanged and scheduled the install. All went well. The Printer was easy to set up on all devices. It's fast We have only printed b/w in standard print. So, no real color and photos to date. I like the tank for ink. I was tired of being ripped off for cartridges.

Wow! I ordered this printer today and I couldn't believe it but, it was delivered in just a few hours, I didn't expect that, it said it was going to be delivered the next day which I thought was great! I was very impressed. With the installation app that is provided, set up quick and easy, it shows you how to install the ink and printheads after it takes you through the steps to connect it to your computer I haven't really used it besides doing the printer alignment test, but that came out visibly good, and the machine noise level is minimal. Totally happy so far. I Would recommend.

I was looking for a compact, not-ugly, lightweight, color printer, with a flatbed scanner (ideally without a document feeder)… I know. Picky. I really wanted a laser but too large for my space, and I dreaded going back to inkjet with the overpriced ink tanks. In the end I settled on trying the Smart Tank 7001. Important note: I’ve run my own IT support/computer repair business since 2004. I’ve probably setup hundreds of printers of all types in that time. Getting a good one is luck of the draw. I don’t know if I’d recommend this to the average user based on my setup experience since based on some reviews I’m assuming others have hit the same problems as well. First of all, I’ve setup Epson refillable printers previously, though I don’t like the top-load paper trays. From what I remember, their bottles were less accident prone and had an auto-stop feature when the tank was full. These HP bottles require you to remove the cap and then remove a seal inside… I nearly dropped one in the process and got ink on my hands. Could be better! Pretty sure the Epson's were wrapped on the outside and didn't require opening. Also, if you let it fill until it stops, there’s some excess ink that could be messy… if I didn’t fill all the way it seemed cleaner. From there, this is the first time I couldn’t get a printer to work out of the box. Since there’s no screen to input the wifi credentials (which seems to be a backwards trend with printers lately), that meant using the HP Smart App on my phone to set it up… ugh. The app recognized the printer right away, and my wifi network, but refused to connect. I worked around this by connecting my computer to the printer’s WiFi Direct SSID. Luckily with my Mac I could just install the printer from there automatically and access the printer’s built-in configuration webpage and manually join my wifi network. Took maybe two minutes. On Windows you’d probably need to figure out the IP or hostname of the printer yourself to bring up the settings page. Then, over the next two days the printer would constantly show as being unavailable, even though my network said it was still connected and I could ping it. This is a major problem with modern HPs that I see all the time: constantly getting into some sort of limbo state where it’s connected but not responding. Eventually I tried two things: in the printer configuration page again I turned off the 5GHz radio, and disabled IPv6. Sometimes this works for my customers, sometimes not. I’ve had this for over a month now and it hasn’t disconnected since. (I have Eero Pro 5s in my house for my wifi if curious.) When I don’t print for a while, the first page can take a minute or more to print, and while it’s doing whatever maintenance it’s doing, the computer thinks it’s not responding. It’s annoying, but I can tolerate it. I don’t know if this is one of those awful HPs that require you to setup an HP account to scan (insane!) but having a Mac means I never have to deal with that garbage because I just use Apple’s scanner app. I haven’t tried it in Windows yet, sorry. Some people had complaints about auto shut off and things like that – there are settings in the config webpage to change if it does that. If it’s connected to wifi it just goes to sleep like a normal printer. I use it for generic printing and #10 envelopes. I like that I can switch between the two size without having to tell it what paper is in it – unlike some of the newer OfficeJets. I miss the older printers that had automatic paper size detection and auto print head alignment, but everything is going backwards I guess. Bottom line: I'm happy enough with it that I would recommend it to someone that wouldn't have a problem working around its quirks if they run into them. Print quality seems fine.

If you have owned enough inkjet printers you know if it is not used often enough you can go through expensive cartridges because they are not being used and dry out. The Tank Printer takes care of this problem. The bottles of ink last longer and it has replaceable print heads. This does all the same things my older inkjet printer does but better. HP has a better app not so you can easily print from your phone to the printer without a problem just using the app on your phone.

Replaced my hp 5000 all in one with this. I am very glad I did. Prints nicely and quick. And I now know where my ink levels are I can keep a set of bottle on hand an NO MORE monthly fee!

The tankless feature is fine and does seem to be economical over time. However, the biggest issue I have with this printer is the flimsy ('cheap') paper tray that acts as a base for the printed materials shelf. The spring loaded paper stop gets caught whenever you need to pull the drawer for printing. A small but problematic quality issue as refilling paper is a fairly frequent interaction with any printer. Nonetheless, the printing quality is smear-free and the set-up, though not synchronous was easy enough. Most HP printers earn a 5 star from me--this one gets 4 due to the above tray issue.

This printer grabbed my attention because it features ink tanks versus requiring the need to replace several ink cartridges. While the price of the printer might deter some people from buying it, the savings realized by its efficient use of ink and inexpensive refills will overall make it comparable to less expensive makes and models that still rely on the ink cartridges. One thing to keep in mind too--other than a few cases when you may experience a lemon product, you should be able to get a lot of use out of this model if you take care of it. Familiarize yourself with its features. Several online forums and literature can help. The printer works just fine using a USB cable, in case you're wondering. You can also fit a USB-C to USB adapter to your old USB printer cable so that you can connect your printer to a USB-C port on your computer or laptop. The HP Smart app is there for you to use, if you so choose. Some people may experience issues with it. Others may just love it. Just know that there are ways to work around it if you don't want to use the app. For example, an Ubuntu operating system automatically detects the printer, and you won't have to bother with having to download and install HP Smart. It would have been nice to have a document feeder option, for scanning or copying multiple pages at once. And it would have been nice to have a guage in front of the paper feed tray to help keep your paper options of various lengths in place. I'm sure we can think of some hacks to keep the paper in place. I think because the printer is set up to be more of a wireless printer while using the HP Smart app, it relies on its few push buttons and its small and narrow display screen. This might throw some of you off, especially if you're used to other printers with larger touchscreen displays (and more touchscreen options). Again, familiarize yourself with the printer's features, and you won't be totally lost. Overall, this printer should do a fine job.

have only had printer few weeks, but functions well so far. like the bottle ink and hope it lasts as long as the store said. mostly use printer and copier features, rarely use scan and never use fax. two things i'm not completely satisfied with are, to increase the number of copies, i have to hold the start button, guess i'll get used to that, but sometimes if i hold it down to long i get to many copies. the other is the paper tray is tight below the tray for the copy to come out, had there been a fraction of an inch between them they would not get in each others way. those two are minor and do not effect the good of this machine, just means i'll get used to them and things should be good.
