MMA star Gina Carano (Haywire, Fast and Furious 6) stars as Ava, a trained fighter with a dark past in this intense action/thriller from director John Stockwell (Blue Crush, Crazy/Beautiful). When her new husband (Cam Gigandet, Twilight) vanishes during their Caribbean honeymoon, Ava uncovers a violent underworld of conspiracy in the middle of an island paradise. Armed with a deadly set of skills, Ava sets out to discover the truth and to take down the men she thinks are responsible for her husband's abduction, one by one. Ismael Cruz Cordova (The Good Wife), Luis Guzmán (Traffic), Treat Williams (Chicago Fire), Amaury Nolasco (Prison Break), Stephen Lang (Avatar) and Danny Trejo (Machete) co-star.

So, I'm rather picky when it comes to any films with martial artists because I expect to see some great fighting. I always hope the storyline is good but the martial arts absolutely have to be top-notch. I am a fan of Gina's well known fighting skills and am pleasantly surprised at her recent forays into acting as well considering that is not the background from which she emerged. That being said...I will say I was dissapointed in the smaller amount of martial arts/fighting in the film. I was expecting something similar to her other film, Haywire, and unfortunately that wasn't the case. Yes there was some here and there but when you watch Gina you want and expect to see her kicking butt throughout a larger portion of the film. Fighting aside, it definately allowed her to spread her acting wings. I was especially impressed with her performance while she was checking hospitals for her hubby...she did well in expressing the worry, frustration and intense emotion in a very believable way. The plot itself is decent but nothing amazing. The end of the film where Danny Trejo arrives seems a bit contrived and not completely believable but other than that it's worth a watch. So, in a nutshell the film is definately worth seeing, just plan to appreciate that her performance gets more play than her fighting. Both are enjoyable.

Gina Carano's follow-up to Haywire is another step forward for a career in action movies establishing her as a legitimate action hero, should she decide to continue down that path. She has delivered two great action films and a natural knack for acting, especially for a newcomer. The film has a nice flow to it with a lot of great fight scenes and it maintains a good steady build of suspense.
