Let's start with the bad. First, we couldn't get the Autobuilder build to work at all. The design is very finicky, as the grabbing claw isn't connected to a motor, and is completely reliant on the friction being just right to pick up pieces and release them in the right place. We simply couldn't get this to work. If the friction was enough to pick up a piece, it wouldn't release it. This was obviously very disappointing, and was only made more frustrating by a week of utterly worthless interactions with customer service via email, chat and phone, which ultimately seemed to conclude with a shrug and an "it's an inconsistent build." (For reference, the phone seems to be the way to go on the customer service, although the live chat was helpful once when a firmware update froze up late at night) The second major problem is that the app is essentially crippleware, in the sense that it deliberately disables many of its programming features when you are trying to use them with one of the main builds. This is an artifact of the basic design, which for each build walks you through a series of activities which gradually introduce new features for each build. For each build, you can only access coding blocks after they have been introduced in an activity, but the result is that fundamental coding features like variables and conditional statements are completely unavailable in most builds. You can use them if you start a robot project from scratch, but then you can't access all of the blocks specific to the individual builds (of which there are many). This problem could easily be fixed by an update to the app, for instance automatically opening up all coding blocks on a given build once you have finished all the activities, but it is a huge design flaw, and makes the claim that the product teaches children about variables borderline false advertising. Now for the (mostly) good news. In terms of play value, this has to be one of the best, if not the best Lego set for the money. The fact that it comes with five builds (four if we ignore the Autobuilder) and an extensive set of activities for each one is a great start, and of course it allows building and programming a robot from scratch as well. But it also includes several builds that can serve as the underlying base of a build-your-own robot, including a walker and a wheeled vehicle. We haven't tried these yet, but they look like they will be great gateways to completely from-scratch designs. I think the cat was my favorite build, partly because nearly all its various activities integrated well and could naturally be combined into a single complex program which for instance randomly chose between several options for what the cat would do next. The guitar was a pleasant surprise, mainly because it behaved so differently from the others -- it demonstrated that the motors could be used as physical input devices rather than to move parts of the robot. Vernie and MTR were cool but a bit underwhelming, and in terms of activities both felt a bit like a bunch of random conflicting ideas tossed together. I did end up with a sense overall that the app team ended up underemphasizing actual physical interaction with the robot, so that my kids spent a lot more time dealing with the iPad than looking at or interacting with the robot. But that's not to say there weren't a solid number of opportunities for interaction with each model. Minor flaws included a buggy app with a tendency to crash, and sensors that weren't always reliable (mistaking similar colors, or behaving slightly inconsistently when measuring distance). It seems like more careful testing of the builds and activities could have mitigated this even without hardware changes. The app also has an annoyingly persistent insistence on avoiding words, which makes essentially no sense in the context of a product recommended for ages 7-12, and results in nearly non-existent documentation that makes a lot of its behavior far more mysterious than necessary. It goes through batteries fairly rapidly, so a good set of rechargeables is recommended, but in all the builds it's easy to swap the batteries in and out, so this was no problem for us. Overall, it's frustrating in that it could easily have been a total home run, but the two major issues described above create a lot of unnecessary angst. Nonetheless, it's already provided far better value for money than any of the other Lego products I've gotten for my kids, and I expect it will continue to be a major activity for the foreseeable future.

For any kid (or senior) who enjoys assembling legos, this is an outstanding kit to learn programming. It provide a block based approach for creating a sequence of commands to instruct the assembled device. The setup cleverly exploits microphones and speakers on tablets or smartphone to enhance the experience of the system while minimizing the need for additional transducers to be integrated into the device. The one shortcoming I noted is that when the batteries have drained, the setup tries to connect via bluetooth to the tablet but it unable to drive the motors. If the move hub can use a flashing LED to indicating that the battery needs to be changed, it would alleviate a lot of stress in troubleshooting.

We purchased this for my son, he is having a great time building and coding the various projects. Unlike other Lego sets, you have different options to build and automate, making this a good play value given all the options

After watching the Lego reality show we bought this kit and the kids have had a blast building. The creations are lots of fun and the instructions in the app are easy to follow. One suggestion I would have to the app developers is allow multiple devices to share the same build. One kid wanted to build using their tablet and then the other kid wanted to build using their tablet. So it takes a minute to get back to the correct step in the instructions. Overall an AWESOME product.

Normally we finish with a LEGO set in a day, maybe two if it is a big one. The LEGO boost set, however, had multiple creations you could build with just the one boost set. We built, coded and enjoyed the set for three weeks. Then we discovered you can buy other sets and make them robotic using the boost set. It has been a lot of fun and we are still using the kit a month later. This has been the best LEGO set we have ever purchased!!

My son absolutely loves this set. He was totally focused on building the robot Vernie and didn’t want to stop. We haven’t even interacted with him yet using the app, But we had a good time following along on our iPad as it guided us though the robot build. This is a great introduction to lego robotics and great for younger kids the Mindstorm EV3 set might be too advanced for.

We love our lego boost. There is so much to do with it. It is also educational because we all learned how to code the lego for different activities. The app is a bit wonky, but it might be because we have it on our iphone 6s that is a bit old. We also were able to connect it to our lego ninjago dragon amd made the dragon move. It was a bit spendy toy but well worth the money.

I liked this product because my son is fond of Lego. Connecting with iPad and programming it will be new learning curve for kids. Only issue is with battery life. It is consuming it too much. I think they should provide rechargeable battery like other toys.

This toy is not just a toy...it is a learning experience in coding wrapped up in a fun Lego building experience. My grandson has had hours and hours of fun. There is a lot of things you make with this toy so I am expecting many more hours of fun with it.

This product combines the fun of legos with the educational aspect of simple programming. I would recommend this product for kids that enjoy building legos. The automatation that comes with the robot (or other finished LEGO) is a bonus. My son, who is 7, has really enjoyed this toy.

Our 9 year old son loves it. Step by step instructions on the app are very helpful. We organized legos by color and it’s easy to find pieces.

My son is only five so needs a bit of help, but actually does pretty well building on his own. He does great with the coding on his own.

This kit is mostly great. My son and I had a lot of fun building it and playing around with the guitar we built. However, there are a couple of flaws. The greatest flaw is that the coding is entirely picture based, and they don’t have a key or anything explaining what each symbol does. You mostly have to figure it out via building the device and experimentation. The other flaw is that it doesn’t come with a good storage box for the pieces. We had to buy something separate for that.

I bought this gift for my 8 year old daughter for Christmas, since she is interested in robotics. She flew threw the first 3 of 5 different creations in the first few days after Christmas. The free app (required to operate the robot creations) have easy to follow instructions - she was able to follow them with little help from me. At half the price of the EV3 Mindstorms kit, it's a great introduction for kids who might be interested in robotics.

My 6 yo son loves Legos and the added robotics and programming elements are great to develop his love of STEM learning.

I got this while on sell to "boost" the value. While kids are stuck at home this has helped keep them busy building the Legos and playing with the programming app. I strongly suggest you use this with a tablet over a phone due to the visual interface. We've only gotten to the robot build solar. I'm surprised how much functionality there is! My kids are recording their voices, programming a sentry robot, playing draw with a robot that can launch a projectile, etc...

Got this for my 7 year old niece so she can learn how to build and program at a young age and have fun. Plus, its fun for adults too.

My daughter wanted to learn about robotics and this item is perfect for my 7 year old. It really increased her confidence that she can build and code the lego robot herself. My older daughter built and coded a different robot at her school and she said lego boost is so much easier. It’s perfect because my 7 year old didn’t need help from me and she independently put it together and coded herself.

Have a 1st grader and a 3rd grader, both love playing and learning with this set. Fairly easily for the kids to use by themselves once the parent sets everything up on the iPad. Bought this for enrichment learning during the summer of COVID in 2020, as summer school had been cancelled.

We purchased this set for our son that can speed through most LEGO builds. Boost added a new level of complexity by introducing him to programming. The build is only a small portion of what this set can do. The app and programming is definitely for beginners, but provides a good challenge for a seven year old.
