About this product
In conjunction with the Orchestra's 30th Anniversary Season, Music Director Nicholas McGegan and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra announce the launch of the ensemble's own recording tag, Philharmonia Baroque Productions. The tag's début showcases the late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson in a live 1995 recording of Berlioz's Les Nuits d été and a live 1991 recording of arias from Handel's Giulio Cesare, Ottone, Arianna, Radamisto, and Agrippina. Hunt Lieberson had a long and fruitful relationship with McGegan and Philharmonia Baroque. The Berlioz is the last of seven acclaimed recordings she made with the orchestra and the first time she ever sang the full Berlioz song cycle in performance. Lorraine was in her element, and the result was splendid. These incredibly moving performances are now available to a wide audience for the first time. Album Tracks 1. I remember when Lorraine sang through the opening recitative of Mein Herze schwimmt i'm Blut BWV 199 during the first rehearsal for the performance with Kahane and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The musicians sat in silence after the movement ended. At first the musicians wiped tears from their eyes while some clapped timidly. Then followed uproarious applause from the orchestra and the few lucky guests. That first run-through was good enough for the final performance. Lorraine made it seem as if she were singing this music directly to you and to you alone.Inch -Attiyeh producer. Album Tracks 1. Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G Major, BWV 1049 I. Allegro 2. The Halle and Sir Mark Elder follow their previous highly acclaimed DeBussy albums, with a stunning orchestral collection including a world premiere recording. This collection features works from across the composer's career, from his early winning of the Prix de Rome, as a result of which he composed the delicate cantata La Demoiselle elue in 1887. Recorded following the highly acclaimed Proms performance and featuring stand-out soloists Anna Stephany and Sophie Bevan, hailed by reviewers. The enigmatic Nocturnes date from 1897-9 and show the composer at the height of his orchestral powers, in music that is highly evocative of mood and which displays deft instrumental writing. Mastery of instrumental writing is further evidenced in the technically demanding Premiere Rhapsodie, which calls upon the full range of emotions from the soloist; here the Halle's Principal Clarinet, Sergio Castello Lopez. The album features a world premiere recording of Colin Matthew's orchestration of the piano piece Les soirs illumines par l'ardeur du charbon, unknown until it's discovery in 2001. This arrangement follows Matthews' universally acclaimed orchestrations of the DeBussy Preludes. Album Tracks 1. Nocturnes L. 91 2. 4- Première Rapsodie, L. 116 3. 5- Marche Écossaise Sur Un Thème Populaire, L. 77 4. 6- Les Soirs Illuminés Par L'ardeur Du Charbon, L.150 5. 7- la Damoiselle Élue, L. 62
