Young Ralph Dibny was fascinated by traveling contortionists and worked out that their abilities stemmed from Gingold, a soft drink containing juice from the gingo fruit. When Ralph drank a concentrated gingo extract it gave him amazing stretching powers. He moved to Central City to start a career as a Super Hero: the Elongated Man. Initially mistaken for a villain by local champion, the Flash, Ralph quickly built a reputation as an eccentric hero, detective, and member of several Justice League teams. He also somehow found time to fall in love with Sue Dearbon, and after they were married, the couple traveled the country, solving mysteries.

The post-Crisis Blackhawkwas Janos Prohaska, a Polish fighter pilot who fought in the Spanish Civil War. Following the fall of Poland, he traveled to the UK, where he became the commander of the secret Allied Blackhawk Squadron. Blackhawk’s team stayed together after World War II and battled communists and Super-Villains. They subsequently served as both a courier service (Blackhawk Express) and as part of the Checkmate organization.

With only a year’s experience as Gotham City’s new protector, Batman must now confront a nightmare out of the past—a distorted reflection of himself called the Reaper, who hunted Gotham’s criminals a generation earlier. His methods were harsh and cruel, and violent in the extreme. Now, just as a new breed of criminal is rising, the Reaper has returned to deal out his savage brand of justice. And the only way for Batman to stop this death-dealing vigilante is to forge an alliance with the man who destroyed his life—his own parents’ murderer.
