Their earliest recordings contained nods to the teeming energy of early '90s DIY hardcore, the aggravated angularities of This Heat, and the noisy riffing of AmRep's quintessential guitar manglers, but there was never a moment where METZ sounded like they were paying tribute to the heroes of their youth. Vinyl LP pressing. Automat, a collection of non-album singles, B-sides, and rarities dating back to 2009, available on LP for the first time, and including the band's long out-of-print early (pre-Sub Pop) recordings. Featured here are the band's first three 7Inch singles, recorded 2009-2010 and originally released by We Are Busy Bodies Records; a demo version of InchWet Blanket,Inch the explosive single from 2012's METZ; two tracks from the limited-edition bonus single that accompanied preorders of METZ; InchCan't Understand,Inch originally released in 2013 by [adult swim]; and both tracks from the band's 2015 single on Three One G. The vinyl of Automat comes with a bonus single that includes three additional tracks a cover of Sparklehorse's InchPig,Inch from a very limited 2012 Record Store Day split single originally released by Toronto's Sonic Boom record shop; InchI'm a Bug,Inch a cover of The Urinals' art-punk classic, originally released on YouTube (not an actual record tag) in 2014; and METZ's previously unreleased rendition of Gary Numan's InchM.E.Inch All tracks on Automat have been lovingly remastered for maximum fidelity by Matthew Barnhart at Chicago Mastering Service.
Like very nearly every worthwhile thing, making this album was not easy; it was a difficult second album to make. Drawing inspiration from folk/rock from about 1965 to 1973, and Van Morrisons ASTRAL WEEKS in particular, HELPLESSNESS BLUES sees Fleet Foxes heighten and extend themselves, adding instrumentation (clarinet, the music box, pedal steel guitar, lap steel guitar, Tibetan singing bowls, vibraphone, etc., along with more traditional band instrumentation), with a focus on clear, direct lyrics, and an emphasis on group vocal harmonies. We have it on good authority that the album is called HELPLESSNESS BLUES for at least a couple of reasons. One, it's kind of a funny title. Secondly, one of the prevailing themes of the album is the struggle between who you are and who you want to be or who you want to end up, and how sometimes you are the only thing getting in the way of that.
