Q: I bought 2 sets of the 28 mile range midland walkie talkies, installed the batteries and charged according to manufacturers instructions. Batteries went dead in less than 2 hours. What’s up with that?

A: I’ll answer my own question. I called Midland and they said batteries should last 6-8 hours at least. They were very helpful and sent me new battery packs. I have always had good luck with Midland products. Thanks

Q: What Is the range in a concrete zone for example a suburban neighborhood

A: I live in a pretty rural area and out in the open the range was 2miles. Faldo advertisement with the 28 mile claim

Q: Will these work with an existing group of radios? The nursery I work at has some, but not enough radios.

A: Yes - if the are your typical commercial-off-the-shelf radios purchased in any department or sporting goods store. These "walkie-talkies" are "FRS/GRMS" Radios. Family Radio Service (FRS) and General Mobile Radio Service (GRMS) use unlicensed frequencies in the 462 to 467 MHz range (UHF). You need to set all of the radios to the same channel (these have 7 FRS channels and 15 GRMS channels) with the channel selector on each radio. Additionally, since these also have a privacy code selector -- all radios need to have the same privacy code selected. Or, if some radios do not have a privacy code -- leave it deselected. It is easy to select channel and privacy code - just follow the menu on the radios. While these say "up to x miles" of range coverage -- the range you will experience depends heavily on terrain (e.g, the more hills or mountains - the less range), interference from other radio sources, and the strength of your battery.

Q: Can regular batteries be used in these

A: each radio comes with its own rechargeable battery pack. if you wish to use individual batteries instead of the rechargeable battery pack, each radio will require 3 AAA batteries. these work really well for keeping in contact with my children on the farm.

Q: How do I connect the radios

A: Put them on the same channel and use the push to talk button!

Q: Will these work well below decks on a cruise ship?

A: Hey Rip, unfortunately not many radios are going to work well BELOW deck on cruise ships because of the metal that makes up the ship. FRS/GMRS frequencies transmit best over water, in open areas without obstruction, or on flat areas where the other radio user is visible - again this is standard no matter what brand walkie talkie. We would suggest a higher powered handheld, such as the GXT1000VP4, and understanding that it will work best on the top deck, or top deck to next lower level, and that other users will be on these channels as well. We would love to chat this out with you if you would like, give us a call at 816-241-8500 between the hours of 8:00am - 4:30pm CST Monday - Friday!

Q: Is it possible to buy two or more sets and use them all on the same channel to communicate between 4-6 people?

A: Yes, you definitely can. My family are using two sets right now, interchangeably.
