Good hotspot with Caveats
This USB Hotspot does work. However, there are a few caveats that need to mentions before someone decides to purchase it. First, to get the good out of the way, It does work with Google Fi. Which means it should theoretically work with many of the GSM carriers in the U.S. There are other Chinese brands that will work with T-Mobile, but not Google Fi. Second. It does have a simple firewall and a pretty nice web UI. If you manage to get it to work. The big issue with accessing the web UI is that if one owns a newer android phone, the phone will not load the web UI unless first you disable your cellular connectivity, and second, you are running an older browser. It probably works on laptops without issue, but in my use case, I was needing the hotspot to connect to an android head unit, and I only had my newer android phone to work with when programming. I never got the web UI to work on the phone. However, I got the web UI to work on the head unit's browser which. Third. It really is a good plug and play USB hotspot when it recognizes the SIM card. This is a problem as the hotspot uses MiniSIMs instead of the standard microSIMs used by most carriers. This seems to be trivial as one just needs to use an adapter, until one realizes that the SIM slot makes using an adapter not easy. Then the SIM adapters have to be positions slightly away from where it stops in order for the device to read the SIM. This was not a problem on another USB Hotspot I tried. So I know it's a design flaw. Overall the USB hotspot works for what I wanted. Though it is not perfect, It allows enough speed for music streaming and navigation.

Does this do the exact same thing as the hotspot feature on a smart phone or does it offer something that using your phone does not?
Hi profedf, This 4G LTE USB Wi-Fi dongle uses its own dedicated SIM card(s) to create a hotspot. *Of note: the dongle supports both micro SIM and micro SD card upto 32 GB. So to answer your question, yes, it does create a Wi-Fi hotspot using moble data, like a smart phone; however, the USB Wi-Fi dongle offers several advantages over a smart phone, i. e., does not drain your phone's battery, abillity to use dual SIMs, likely offers a more stable connection, acting as a plug-and-play modem for laptops/desktops, and it avoids having to tie up your phone while sharing data.

do i buy data with this device or just plug it in and it works? how many gb
According to the Specifications section, it is compatible with the T-Mobile carrier. So you would have to contact T-Mobile to see what 4G plans they offer, and then choose from those. Also, you would, of course, have to make sure that you would be in the T-Mobile 4G service area when you intend to use it (more than likely you would, but double check). Like any carrier, T-Mobile offers a few plans, up to "unlimited" downloads, but keep in mind that cellular carriers have their OWN definitions of the word "unlimited," which is NOT what you will see in any dictionary. I would like to add that I have had both 4G and 5G service from T-Mobile. Before 5G, their 4G service was just "OK" in the area(s) I used it, with 40Mbps average at home, but up to 70Mbps when I was traveling, so your location, as well as time-of-day and congestion issues come into play.

The specs say this is an "unlocked device" that "can be used on any carrier". However, it also specifically lists T-Mobile as the compatible carrier. Does it only work with T-Mobile or is it an unlocked device that can be used with other carriers?
