We almost bought an Opal years ago and were deterred by the horror stories (reviews). I've been keeping an eye on the various nugget ice machines that have popped up on the market. My neighbors have a few other brands, including the GE Opal. There were two things that helped me decide on this one vs the others. - 44lb of ice per day. Compared to the Opal at 24lb per day, the Newair is the clear winner. Let's be honest, most consumers won't even need 24lb of ice produced in a day. However, 44lb translates into faster ice production. I start the machine in the morning and before I know it, it's full! -Reviews: The reviews online are great and what's important were all the responses by the manufacturer. You don't always see that but it's great to see an engaged manufacturer. It gives me comfort that in the event I have an issue, I'll be in good hands. Startup is simple. You have to run a clean cycle with a full tank of water that takes 15 minutes. After it completes, you'll need to disconnect the hoses on the back and drain into a sink. My suggestion is to run the cleaning cycle next to your sink so you wont have to lift the unit after the cleaning cycle while its still full of water. In regards to noise, we've had a few countertop ice makers over the years (non-nugget) and they're pretty much all the same. The compressor/fan seems to be very similar in terms of noise. This unit is a little louder for the first few batches of ice that are produced, as the ice drops into an empty plastic bin. Once you get a little ice in the bin, it'll dampen the sound of the additional ice falling. I've read other reviews complaining about not having a climate-controlled bin. Give me a break! This is a sub five hundred dollar unit, I don't know what people expect. You're not going to find the exact same feature set you would in a $3000+ built in version. This unit in my opinion, is the best option in its class of countertop nugget ice machines.

I absolutely love this ice machine. Its not loud.. im not really sure where those reviews come from. I dont think its loud at all. We use it so much as a family of 4 that we dont need to transfer it over to the freezer at all. Definitely just like hospital or chick fil a ice. It produced a scoop of ice within 10 min of turning it on. Highly recommend. I did a lot of research before i bought and glad i went with this one.

Wored really good until balc oueces if plactic from somehwere inside the machine started ahowing up in the ice. Lasted less than a year with routine cleaings as recommended.

I read some reviews here that said the machine was loud while others said it wasn't. The good seemed to out weigh the bad so I purchsed this machine. At first, it was quiet and I was curious why others were saying it was really loud until.....mine started making lots of noise and is now extremely loud. We have an open floor plan so it makes it hard to hear the TV without turning it up. Also, I'm not a fan of how you takebthe ice basket out to fill up the machine. It leaves water everywhere and is just super messy. Other than that, it makes ice quickly. I expected more for what I paid.

Makes a lot of ice, but... it is LOUD (not right away, but after a week or so of use) and within the first 6 months after I bought it, I had to get it replaced 3 times due to it going out. So I have now had 4 units in total and am now looking to buy another ice maker...however it will NOT BE THIS BRAND! First time, it was still running, but did not make ice. Second time, it just quit all together. Third time, it was making a horrible loud popping noise. Also, it is quite messy the way the ice drawer slides in/out. Wether it is to get ice or to refill to unit with water. Due to the "drip slots" in the bottom of the drawer, it drips water everywhere! For a countertop unit, it is a bit on the larger size.

I purchased this ice machine and retuned it within a year because it stopped making ice. Received a free replacement because I am a Total Tech Member (and Best Buy was awesome about the entire process!) The replacement ice machine failed within a year. So, I returned it and purchased a different ice machine. I only used bottled water to make ice and cleaned it religiously. In addition, the cleaning process is a bit of a hassle too. When it works, it met expectations. However, I do not recommend this ice machine. Judgement: Easy to use, hassle to clean and ultimately not reliable.

Good: Only had for 4 months is makes alot of ice. Does have some noice normal to make ice. Bad: after 4 months its started to make a griding noise. Going to try to see if it will do again hopefully not.

It's an ok machine in that it makes ice in the nugget size, which is what i was looking for. But it's so noisy it keeps me up at night in the room next door. If i had to choose again, i would pick a different machine. I also don't like that you have to reill it by taking the ice drawer out.

This was purchased as a gift for my wife, the size and functionality of the ice maker were what we really wanted. Unfortunately like other reviewers have said it is very noisy, and it is not very easy to add water from a jug into the reservoir.

This product is good, it makes ice by adding water to bin no need for a water hook-up. However the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. It does not keep the ice frozen, but as it melts it recycles to make more ice. I think the 1st one I got was a dud it quit working after about 5 months but the Best Buy protection plan was easy to swap out for a brand new one which there has not been any problem with.

I have purchased this model once & had a replacement. Both broke. The second one just outside the replacement window. Same issue both times. The wheel that pushes the ice broke apart giving me dirty ice. Little black specks until all the pieces broke off into the ice. It works great when working but neither machine lasted a full year.

Loved this ice maker until it broke 7 months later. Internal mechanisms broke so that it would not make nugget ice anymore instead it was mushy ice plus black plastic would fill into the ice bin.

This Newair nugget ice maker makes ice much faster than its top competitor at a much lower price. If you want excellent nugget ice when you need it, get this machine. The noise is typical of most ice makers, truly no louder than a standard box fan. Newair continously makes quality refrigeration products, its what they do. Love the self clean function, super easy to use. Light feature allows for an easier visual observation of the ice level. Overall extremely happy with this purchase, highly recommend.

Loved it at first but it broke after 6 months. Also it can be pretty noisy. Best Buy is replacing it under the warranty so hopefully the 2nd one lasts.

Purchased this unit last December for a Christmas present. The unit broke last month, causing small plastic pieces to appear in the ice. We've reached out to support to get the unit replaced under the 1 year warranty. We were told that this unit can no longer be replaced, but were offered options for an upgrade. All we'd have to do is pay the difference in cost. We agreed, but unfortunately, the NewAir payment portal has been down for over two weeks, with no indication of when this will be resolved. It feels like NewAir is stalling, not wanting to actually replace the unit. At this point, I have a $300+ paper weight sitting on my counter.
