Nice macro and sharp lens. I have not used it extensively and did some test shots. Acts as a good portrait lens as well. One peculiarity which is more a Z series feature that the VR motor of the lens is on the moment the camera is turned on. This is different than using it on a DSLR where VR motor turns on when shutter is partially depressed. Nikon confirmed the behavior is normal. Depth of field falls sharply as you take real close ups

I wont get overly technical with this review I will just speak to my experience with the product from out of the box to using it the first weekend. It is well made as most Nikon lenses and feels that way. The sharp clean crisp images it pulls even at true 1:1 are incredible. I compared this lens to the Tamaron 105mm and the Laowa 100mm 2X lens. The others were cheaper and I thought I might miss out on the Laowa's 2X but its certainly not the case after using it. With the Laowa I would be stuck with manual and in macro mode full time. With the Nikon its versatile enough that if I want to switch from an insect to a person it goes flawlessly to use as a general prime. I attached some pictures of my first day of using this lens with a d810. I was using a flash at 1/8 Shutter 200 ISO 100-400 and f8-22 (the depth of field can get very narrow, we're talking hair thin). I used a flash reflector to bounce the flash down and a diffuser (cone shaped) on my lens to soften the flash.

Wow! This lens lives up to the hype, excellent in every way. Best buy service and shipping were seamless. Very happy with this purchase.

Stunning macro lens that takes phenomenal portraits as well, the bokeh is smooth and the images are crisp. On Z mount mirrorless Nikon cameras it's manual focus only which can be tricky with insect macro shots, but that's a small price to pay for a great lens.

I real love the crisp, clear images this lens produces. Macro at a distance. All around a great lens. I’ve also used this for portraits. Soft and creamy bokeh when used as portrait lens.

This Nikon 105mm Macro lens is one of the must-have lens for macro photographers as well as for beginners to pro users. The lens take super sharp pictures, vignetting is almost to minimal and it's considered a fast lens compared to other lenses. I always carrry it all the time.

This lens makes for a great addition to the collection of amateur photographers. Although its price is a bit high, the lens feels extremely sturdy. After taking the first few pictures you will certainly feel that the money was spent well.

This is an amazing lens.. Perfect for macro photography.. The 105mm focal length makes it a great "walk around lens" and the f/2.8 apeture makes it good for low light shooting.. Autofocus was a little slow for me but that sometimes can be fixed with the focus "limit" switch

I have always like macro photography but I didn't have the money to buy it until now and I super excited that I have it now and that I can take portraits or macro shot. I have nikon D750 and D3400.

I chose this lens over the other competitors mainly because of the Nikon brand and reviews that I read. The pictures produced are very nice.

This is a great lens if you are looking for a macro or fixed focal portrait lens. Just remember when you are close, this has crazy shallow depth of field with beautiful bokeh! This is one thing to note, if you're very close to your subject the lens will NOT stop down to it's 2.8. aperture. I should also add, this is my second lens I received from Best Buy. The first lens I received had a noticeably focus drag when you manually focused the lens. Although fast when it was in auto, I believe the second lens was even faster. As always, Best Buy was great about replacing the lens. Even though this lens is older (still sporting the red VR), it is incredibly sharp! The noise in the VR mode is noticeable when compared to the newer 3rd and 4th generations VR lenses. It's not an issue with the lens, just older technology.

This lens is absolutely incredible. It is a specialty lens, so it will not stay on your camera all the time. However, I have noticed that I am using this lens not only as a true 1:1 macro, but also as a portrait lens, and a fast aperture short telephoto lens. The picture quality is immaculate - it is by far the sharpest lens I have ever shot with. Good contrast too, beautiful colors, smooth buttery bokeh. Metal body, as are all the gold ring professional Nikkors. Bundled with VRII, it is a very versatile lens. This lens will open up an entirely new world for your photography. I find myself pointing this lens at the most mundane objects and getting something truly unique and amazing. Don't hesitate because of the price - it is worth every penny!

super quality images from macro to 105mm. versatile. used it for macro in the Arboretum, awesome detail. And also caught a coyote who wandered by 60 feet out, with lots of clarity, versatile. maybe would have chosen a different lense for the coyote, but.... time to shoot the bear is when the bear is there.

The auto focus works pretty well most of the time. It's recommended to go manual for close up shots. I've done a number of close ups with the auto focus on and it pretty much can get it better than I can do manually. The depth of field can be very short. And the lens is pretty heavy. I have used it mainly for close-ups but it will work for portrait work and as a short telephoto as well. The auto focus is fine on telephoto shots and portraits. It seems to hunt more if you are doing a close-up with an open background such as sky.

After using this lens extensively I found the auto focus feature of 105mm lens is not so great, since it gets confused easily what is my focus point, so with half shutter it starts zooming in/out between the foreground and background. So with half shutter I have to manually adjust to get sharp focus. After the focus adjustment you get the best picture possible. I love it. It creates a perfect bokah.
