  • General
    • Brand: Nikon
    • Model Number: 26506
    • Product Name: COOLPIX B500 16.0-Megapixel Digital Camera
    • Color: Black
    • Digital Camera Type: Point and Shoot Cameras
  • Imaging
    • Image Sensor Type: CMOS (CCD and CMOS are the two main technologies used in image sensors. CCD, the older of the two types, turns analog light signals into digital pixels. This conversion happens without distortion, resulting in high-quality images. Newer CMOS sensors use transistors at each pixel to move electrical charges. CMOS sensors are typically less expensive, but also require more light to create distortion-free images.)
    • Image Sensor Size: 1/2.5” (5.76 x 4.29 mm)
    • Image Resolution (Display): 4608 x 3456 (Refers to the number of pixels, both horizontally and vertically, used to either capture an image or display it. The higher the resolution the finer the image details.)
    • Zoom Capability: true (This function allows for magnification of the subject.)
    • Digital Zoom: 4x (A digital zoom is accomplished electronically, with no adjustment of the camera's optics, and no optical resolution gained in the process. The existing data is not enhanced or added to, merely displayed at a lower resolution, thereby giving an illusion of an enlarged image.)
    • Optical Zoom: 40x (The optical zoom uses a combination of lenses that magnify the image prior to it being registered at high resolution by the imaging sensor.)
    • Low Light/High Sensitivity: false (High sensitivity digital imaging devices are designed to work in low light conditions to produce a high dynamic range image.)
    • Image File Format(s): JPEG, MP4 (Standardized software format(s) of storing digital images. The type of format chosen for capturing and compressing the image can determine quality, level of detail, and storage space required.)
  • Focus
    • Autofocus: true (Allows the camera to automatically focus through the lens, rather than by adjusting the lens manually.)
    • Eye Autofocus (Eye AF): false (Automatically seeks out and focuses on the subject's eye and holds it as the camera and subject move and as the photographer shoots at high frame rates.)
  • Exposure Control
    • Shutter Speeds: All modes: from 1/1500 sec. to 1 sec.; for maximum speed during high-speed continuous shooting: 1/4000 sec.; for Star trails in Multiple Exposure Lighten Scene Mode: 25 sec. (The length of time the shutter remains open when the shutter release is activated, expressed in fractions of seconds. The longer the shutter is open, the more light that is able to be captured by the camera sensor.)
    • Brightness Control: true (Allows the camera to adjust the brightness of a captured image for optimal exposure.)
    • Burst Mode: true (Also referred to as continuous shooting. This feature captures multiple shots in rapid succession.)
    • Self Timer: true

    • Effective Pixels: 16 megapixels (The actual number of pixels which make up the viewable image.)
  • Lens
    • In-Lens Image Stabilization: true (This feature helps reduce image blurring from camera motion. Lens stabilization means an element within the lens moves automatically to counteract detected motion.)
  • Flash
    • Flash Modes: Automatic, Off (The flash feature emits light to increase the brightness of a subject in dimly lit environments. Common modes include Auto and Red-Eye Reduction.)

Q: Just bought camera. When I turn off camera, the on/off light stays on. Nothing in manual about it. Help?

A: The green light you are seeing on your Nikon COOLPIX B500 digital camera is to let you know that the camera is still connected to the smart device and that the SnapBridge app is still on; ready for use. To un-pair the camera when you aren't using it, simply open up the SnapBridge application, press the camera listed that is currently paired with and say "OK" to un-pairing. Then open Bluetooth settings on your smart device, choose the B500 camera and "Forget this device". The green light will no longer be there when you turn the camera off. To connect them again, just open up the SnapBridge app and start the process for pairing by pressing the camera icon. To learn more about your camera please contact Nikon Support.

Q: I want to start a YouTube channel. Is this a good camera with good quality for videos?

A: The Nikon COOLPIX B500 digital camera allows you to capture video in Full HD 1080p quality with stereo sound and Hybrid Vibration Reduction (VR) to counteract shaky hands. There's even a Short Movie Show mode which helps to combine multiple videos into one thrilling, fast-motion sequence movie. In addition, this easy-to-use, point and shoot camera has a Creative Mode that lets you apply different effects to your video to really help them stand out. It is recommended you use an approved memory card with a speed of 6 or more for videos.

Q: Is the zoom on this camera clear enough for me to tell if the Bigfoot I've been seeing is a male or female at 300 yards?

A: The B500 has a 40x optical zoom provides super telephoto power! Add to that its Dynamic Fine Zoom, an enhanced digital zoom which effectively doubles the camera's reach. The B500's Lens-Shift Vibration Reduction (VR) helps to keep your long distance shots steady, and its 16-megapixel CMOS sensor captures every detail. Keep in mind that other factors will impact the shot - for example - if the creature is excessively hirsute then it may not be possible to determine its gender regardless of how close you are able to zoom in.

Q: Does this camera use only AA batteries only?

A: The Nikon COOLPIX B500 digital camera takes either four LR6/L40 (AA-size) alkaline batteries, four FR6/L91 (AA) lithium batteries or four EN-MH2 Rechargeable Ni-MH batteries. No other types of batteries should be used with this camera.

Q: I like to take a lot of outdoor photos, is this camera good for that?

A: Yes, this camera is good for outdoor photography. It includes picture shooting modes for bird watching, panoramic landscapes, fireworks, night landscapes, sports and sunsets.

Q: Can the camera do manual cropping, and saving, of the cropped picture?

A: The Nikon COOLPIX B500 digital camera allows you to easily crop images taken with the camera. When images are cropped an edited copy is created and saved, leaving the original intact.

Q: does this camera have a viewfinder?

A: Sadly, it does not. The optical viewfinder has all but disappeared except on the high-end DSLR cameras. The 3" LCD display seems to do a good job and I am able to see images in bright sunlight. The LCD on the B500 has the ability to tilt down so you can see what you are snapping even if you are holding it above your head. I'm kind of short so I am looking forward to using this feature.

Q: What would the recommended SD card be for this camera?

A: Nikon recommends SDHC or SDXC-type Sandisk or Lexar Brand SD cards as being compatible with the B500. The Sandisk brand cards have been tested up to 512GB. The Lexar brand cards have been tested up to 256GB.
