First off the good: can create stunning images for an exceptional price. R3d is beloved for so many reasons. The screen is as incredible as reviewers claim. No over heating in any situation I’ve put it in. Zmount is great and can adapt lenses. Low rolling shutter, feels close to global shutter. Fantastic battery life. Takes amazing photos. Low light has great performance at second iso. The (really) bad: my first copy (had to exchange) had such bad moire that footage was completely unusable. It needs a much stronger olpf to be considered a professional camera. The files need compression. When storage costs a small fortune, this camera becomes increasingly difficult to choose to shoot on. You will fill hard drive like you will not believe. It desperately needs focus peaking with R3d. Menus are the worst in the business, this especially feels bad when RED has such good menus, it just makes this feels like a huge step back. Ergonomics are terrible, the moment you put a slightly heavy lens on it, it becomes impossible to hold safely. The lack of buttons are annoying at best. The weird: still have no idea what to do with the micro sd.

I’ve only been using the Nikon ZR for about two weeks, coming from the Nikon Z6III, and I’m honestly really impressed so far. The image quality is super sharp and the colors look great straight out of camera. Video performance has been solid, and the autofocus keeps up well even when I’m moving around. It’s also really easy to use. I didn’t have to spend a ton of time digging through settings to get good results, which I appreciate. It feels well-built but still light enough to carry around all day. Still getting used to everything, but so far I’m really happy with it and glad I picked it up.

Fantastic camera regardless of price - even better considering the price. The image quality is phenomenal, battery life is great, and usability is also great with the giant built in screen. Even without a cage (still planning on getting one) the ergonomics aren't nearly as bad as I originally thought. I have shot one wedding on it so far, half gimbal, half handheld and the results were beyond my expectations. The R3D footage is so sharp and so easy to color grade. The autofocus is also very impressive. This camera really shines using the RAW codecs, so I would mostly recommend to people familiar with RAW workflows. If you are looking for a compact cinema camera capable of extremely high quality footage and are ready for the file sizes and RAW workflow, I 100% recommend this camera. The small ergonomic issues like no built in grip, micro-hdmi and cfexpress slot being in the battery door are such minor issues when taking into account how good the rest of the camera is.

The larger 4" screen is nice but no substitute for a viewfinder in some situations. If you want it for mainly video with only occasional still photography use, it's a good camera. If, however, you plan on shooting a lot of still photography too, take a close look at the Z6 III. It's a better hybrid camera for shooting both still images and video but is minus the Red RAW codec. This ZR's pluses are the Nikon version of Red's raw video codec, R3D NE, the larger 4" screen, and relatively affordable price. The negatives are no viewfinder for when you really need one, a micro SD card slot instead of a full size SD slot (may be an issue to some), practically no grip, and the small size doesn't balance well with larger Nikon lenses. The Red raw video is really good though once it is color graded in a video editor.

This is the best camera I have owned so far. I am very happy with my purchase. Video quality is excellent and super cinematic as well as the photos. Very easy to use and the screen is large and bright. Only downside so far for me is that I can't use SSD to record videos but that will be fixed with an update soon.

Overall this is a great camera for video and stills. Image quality is fantastic and it is a very capable stills camera. AF is very capable, seems to be similar to my other Z cameras like the Z8, Zf, Z9. Will shoot 20FPS in raw and the electronic shutter is fast enough that it has not presented any issues. I really like it overall but there are a few areas for improvement. In video, the exposure tools are difficult to determine if the exposure is correct. It has a lot of video codecs but should have some more quality settings to be able to shoot more compressed in the higher quality options. I still struggle to remember the power button is on the left. Other than that, really love this camera.

for the price it's a nice camera! 6k raw open gate big 4inch screen battery life is decent i use sony and this is a fun b cam hoping for future firmware updates to make this even more better!

Camera is truly excellent. Cinematic quality with ease of use. Service at Best Buy was brilliant. They took the time and had the knowledge to guide us through many options. We feel we then picked the best for our use case.

Here it is. There is no such thing as the worlds "best" camera. My take on the ZR is focused on what it has vs what it lacks. We are talking about a 6k 12 bit sensor capable of filming a version of Red Raw at up to 60FPS. On top of that you get 32 bit float internal recording! Like, think about it. You could put that set up in a tissue box and sell it to me for $2100 and i would gladly take it. All these influencers complaining about ergonomics, lack of XLR inputs, or no full size HDMI, clearly are focusing on the wrong things. If thats the only things that are important to you then this is the wrong camera. But if you are looking for 12 bit red raw codec in a tiny body. This is it. Matches well with the rest of our Red cameras. Are the files huge? Uh...yeah its filming in 12 bit red raw. Its what you get when you use this format. 5 stars for me for Nikon Red slamming this much power in a tiny body. Used it on two documentary shoots matched with our red komodo and its fantastic. XLR unit available soon through tascam and there are plenty of cages that will make the ergonomics on this better! You find me a cinema camera that doesnt need to be kitted out. Ill wait.

The fidelity of 12- bit REDRAW is unmatched at this price point by anyone except Blackmagic. But when you add in the smaller compact body, better auto focus and 32 bit float audio, the ZR is a no-brainer.

One of my favorite cameras. It’s a learning curve but once you get the hang of it it’s very good. It’s mainly a video camera but the photos are great also.

This was a special and very satisfying purchase. I had a few other options, but when Nikon announced this model with its new specifications, I decided on this one.

You’ve done your research so you know what this camera is about. It has its ‘interesting’ choices, it falls short in some areas, but it does one thing great: it makes me want to shoot.
