A: No, you cannot preset the timer to automatically start. If you plan to use it as a slow cooker it will start the cooking process as soon as the timer (for length of cooking time) is set. It is a great cooking system though. I have had mine for a few years now. Bought my son his last Christmas and my daughter said it is the only thing she really wants this year. I like that you can brown in it and then turn it to the slow cooker setting. Clean up is a breeze as well.

A: Yes. It is Teflon, or Teflon-like. You have to be care in the utensils you use and in washing it. Only wash by hand.
