I'm using this receiver to drive a 3.0 sound system for my office. Elac Uni-Fi series first generation. Two UB51 Bookshelfs and a UC5 Center channel. The sound is super smooth, perfect amount of detail. I leave it in all channel stereo mode with the Bass turned to +6. It sounds balanced, clean, and not fatiguing. I can listen to it all day and still work and be productive. Out of my Macbook, I'm using an "SMSL PO100 PRO" that creates an optical digital out from usb-c. The detail and clarity is incredible, without any interference sound. I tried using analog from the headphone jack and the quality was sub-par. Digital is the only way to go. I downloaded the program "SoundSource" from Rogue Amoeba that allows me to natively adjust the volume for the optical out with the volume controls from my mac, without that program, it's fixed at the loudest setting and you have to adjust the volume from the receiver. At first, I purchased the Yamaha RX-V4A, but it had a weird sound, didn't care for how it processed the audio, couldn't get it to sound right, it was fatiguing and over exaggerated the treble/detail. I also purchased the Onkyo TX-NR6100 and Sony STR-AN1000. I'm using the receiver for near field listening, and the other receivers had too much hissing sound, which is normal for any receiver, but the 5100 has a very minimal amount, not noticeable. Also, the other receivers generate a lot of heat and made my office warmer. The other receivers definitely sounded good, but in a blind test, my ears still prefer the natural sound from the Onkyo 5100. Maybe in a bigger living room, I would have gone with one of the others, but for my near field use case, the Onkyo 5100 was the best choice.

Works great now but had to drop it off at a certified repair shop to replace the hdmi board. Luckily, my open box purchase was still under warranty so I didn’t need to pay for the repair. It’s been great since the repair and was worth the very low open box price I paid.

If you're going to get this receiver to hook up your Xbox Series X, then don't bother. It will do 4K 120hz with vrr but unfortunately with no HDR. Looking at the PDF manual it states that the HDMI 2.1 port is capped at 24gps, not 40gps. Anyways other than that it was OK. Sound was decent but definitely not better than my Denon from 2014. Audysee room correction is better than the standard Onkyo room correction. The higher ended Onkyos will come with DiracLive but this one doesn't have it. The on screen user interface was nice and easy to follow. Anyway, I will be returning it and waiting (forever) for Denons HDMI 2.1 bug free receivers.

If you have a surround setup but don't want to pay thousands this unit checks alot of boxes. I haven't regretted this purchase for one second. Sound really punches and has an easy interface for setup.

Very easy to use and install The sound and quality of image is awesome

I love this new receiver. It is an upgrade yo an old Yamaha. It plays flawlessly through all connections and the sound is incredible. I know some people complain that the unit they received had only two sets of banana clips and the rest pinch connectors but mine came with all banana clips. I would definitely recommend especially that it goes on sale a lot for around $400

A great avr for my setup easy to hook up connections but you do need a e arc hdmi compatible cable to do the on tv setup so you can see it and sometimes you will have to run the speaker setup a couple times to get the right settings but overall a good avr for 7.1 setup good power

A very good Receiver, Easy to operate and is Alexa Compatible..

This has been a great component. After years of daily use it is still a welcome addition to my system. Also my grandkids haven’t found a way to break it yet and they gunk it up pretty good trying

Good, affordable entry receiver for a home theater

Have had many brands of receivers over the years and Onkyo is great. Was using a 5.2 model for the past 6 years and decided to upgrade to Atmos. Terrific receiver at a reasonable price.

Great Product!!! Sound very nice with my Definitive Technology speakers and subwoofer.

Already returned to Best Buy and credit already fulfilled due to failure in less than 6 months.

Pros, 1. I got this as an open box item at a killer price. 2. Unlike the pictures shown mine model came with all banana plugs I put which is great. Alligator clips IMO are horrible. 3. Has a lot of the newest features like Bluetooth, Ethernet, app usage, Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, Dolby Vision(and other HDR options), 8K 60hz, 4K 120hz and lastly VRR which is great for gaming. 4. Plenty of power for a small to midsized living room. 5. The menu has a lot of options for things like Alexa, Sonus and other music apps. Cons to be fair, 1. This isn't an easy A/V receiver to setup. Since mine came as open box I didn't get instructions and information for setup online IMO was confusing. 2. Updating the firmware can be a bit or miss depending on the time you update. If the server is busy you may end up with an error. I encounter this and had to try again at a slower server time. 3. For some reason I can't get HDR to passthrough to my computer.

First of all: lots of positives with this unit. Good sound quality, a pretty full suite of features for a reasonably priced unit (especially if purchased on sale or open box), etc. It really pains me to have to leave a bad review, but there were a few too many negatives to ignore: 1. This unit WOULD NOT under any circumstances pass 4k @ 120hz. I tried 3-4 different monitors/TVs, 3-4 different HDMI cables, and spent hours poring over the instruction manual and google searches. I've probably tried over 50 unique configurations of the above for testing. I even spent over an hour on the phone with an Onkyo support who admitted that I had done everything right, and could eventually offer more than trying some debug mode you can enter that ultimately did not solve the problem. We ended the conversation with him repeating "well it's not guaranteed to work with all equipment configurations, so Onkyo isn't going to process an exchange or any similar remedy because it's not our problem." That's great, Onkyo support guy, but the problem isn't that 4k @ 120hz doesn't work under A configuration. The problem is 4k @ 120hz doesn't work for me under ANY configuration. I have 8k high speed HDMI cords. I have a brand new PC and monitor. This may not seem like a big deal, but I SPECIFICALLY researched and purchased this model due to its confident marketing of 4k @ 120hz pass through capability. And Onkyo told me, in essence, "sucks to suck." 2. It's super lame and inexplicable why only the front left&right speakers have proper connections on the back. The rest are the tiniest terminals of all time that you're going to have to strip some of the copper off your speaker wires to jam in there. 3. This is neither here nor there as it is very likely a Windows/driver issue, but I've had intermittent trouble getting Windows to recognize this unit as Dolby Atmos capable. YMMV. Want to love this unit, but given the, from my perspective, pretty blatant false advertising and refusal to help me get a key marketed feature, I'm forced to leave a below average review.

Very fine device. Clarity of sound is without peer. Easy to set up and use

Simple to set-up & use and sounds great. It has Binding Post on ALL Speaker Outputs (not just L & R, per the pictures). This must be a new version. I like the compact dimensions allowing it to fit inside my shallow entertainment center. I don't feel like I compromised on anything short of $1500 + units, that are too bulky & overkill for me. If I wanted better, I'd get a Marantz - Cinema 70S and use a separate amplifier. I'll try to add a pic of the Full Binding Post Rear Panel, but it really does have it, That was one of biggest complaints and apparently it's now fixed on this new version.

So far so good! I recently bought into the hype and purchased a 7.2 Denon receiver and was not very impressed. I saw this new 7.2 Onkyo receiver was just released into the market so I purchased it to compare with my new Denon and in my opinion this Onkyo receiver blows it out of the water. I paired this receiver with a 3.1.2 Klipsch setup with plans of going up to 5.2.2 soon. Definitely a great buy and recommend it to everyone!
