Anyone who likes the original should try this remake~! It adds a fresh coat of paint to all the visuals, and a couple shortcuts have been added in some chapters to mitigate some of the backtracking! The new remake soundtrack is good, even adding alternate versions of some songs (like separate songs for Hooktail, Gloomtail, and Bonetail!), although also different from the original, which was a masterpiece in its own right. But, for those who would rather listen to the original soundtrack, the Nostalgic Tunes badge (available for a paltry 1 coin in Rogueport’s Badge Shop) can set the soundtrack back to the original~! This remake is definitely worth playing: if you’ve read the review this long, just get it. I’d say it’s definitely worth it for fans of the original: being able to take TTYD on the go in handheld mode is pretty crazy!!! Just make sure something you’re holding has your name written on it…!

This remake is an essential RPG! Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is back and looking better than ever with stunning HD visuals. The game is packed with charming characters, hilarious writing, and a story that constantly throws fun, weird scenarios at you. The turn-based combat is fast, satisfying, and strategic thanks to the action commands and badge system. They even added smart quality-of-life upgrades to fix some of the original's minor issues, like easier fast-travel. It's the definitive version of one of the best Mario games ever. Verdict: A must-buy! Full of personality and fantastic gameplay.

➕Enhanced Graphics: Improved visuals and animations, especially in locations like Twilight Town. ➕Updated Soundtrack: Access to the original GameCube soundtrack from the Badge shop. ➕Quality-of-Life Improvements: Quick-travel feature and improved hint system, and many more. ➕Consistent Performance: Holds a consistent 30fps in both docked and undocked modes. ➖Lower Frame Rate: Frame rate is 30fps, down from the original 60fps. ➖Script Changes: Some controversial elements have been removed, altering the original dialogue. ➖Pacing: Some chapters feel like they drag, such as Chapter 5 with the back and forth platforming and the Don Piñata fetch quests. ➖ Difficulty: Some returning players might find the game easier than the original due to the quality-of-life changes made in the remake. In Summary: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on the Nintendo Switch revitalizes a classic game with modern enhancements. Despite the contention with the script changes and some pacing issues, its charming visuals, engaging story, and strategic gameplay make it a standout title in the Mario RPG series, appealing to both nostalgic fans and new players. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is hands down one of the best games I’ve ever played. The story is funny, creative, and full of charm, and every chapter feels fresh and exciting. The paper-style graphics still look amazing today and give the game so much personality. The combat is super fun and never gets boring—you actually feel like you’re part of the battle with the action commands and the audience cheering you on. The characters you meet along the way are unforgettable, and the dialogue is surprisingly witty and heartfelt.

Great game already and I’m very happy they made this remake. It runs very smoothly on the Switch, and the graphical upgrade is subtle but works. If you haven’t played it previously, do yourself a service and play it now!

This remake manages to go above and beyond the expectations of Paper Mario fans and Nintendo fans alike and delivers on nearly every front. Brand new music, stunning new visuals with a perfected Paper aesthetic, expressive animations, 360 degree hammering, the ability to switch to gamecube tracks on the fly, it's got it all. There's even 2 new Superbosses that weren't in the original game. And if you had any doubts, you can rest assured that this remake is faithful down to every last detail of the gamecube release from 2004. It manages to improve what was already a masterpiece of a game and push it to near perfection. The best part of TTYD is the stellar badge system which allows for near endless gameplay customization, letting players choose the difficulty themselves. Badges like double pain, unsimplifier, and the ability to only upgrade BP and nothing else makes for a fun and difficult optional extra challenge for skilled players willing to go the extra mile. The only downsides are that some animations especially in battles take a bit too long. Starpower animations, the time it takes to restore HP, FP, and SP after leveling up, and cutscenes are not skippable from the get-go. This could easily be fixed however in a future update, and even these things can be overlooked, since as a whole this game is a magnificent masterclass of an RPG, maintaining all of the nuances and battle mechanics that were in the 1st 2 Paper Mario games. We can only hope that Intelligent systems learns from this and makes a brand new game that follows in TTYD's footsteps and innovates while keeping the core elements which make these games to beloved by us fans. tldr; this is a MUST HAVE game for Nintendo Switch owners. You WILL love this game.

I purchased origami king back when it was released, but it took me a while to get around to playing it. Once I did, I feel in love with the Paper Mario format and wanted more! I kept searching for similar games but nothing was quite the same. I had heard from friends that 1000 year door was the best, but I had no way to play it since I never owned the game cube. When I heard this was being remade for switch is was soooooo excited! Right from the opening scenes this game catches you. It’s full of humor and the story is fast paced, and nothing feel tedious or “grindy”. Every chapter has been delightful and Mario continues to learn new moves and secrets. 1000 Year for far surpasses my expectations, and I simply can not wait till the next Paper Mario title.

This game is amazing. The story is awesome, the characters are wonderfully written, and overall, the combat is just fun. I think more people should pick up this game as their first Mario RPG-type game.

The game is a lot better than I expected it to be! It's still very similar to the original version (and I still prefer the original), but the new changes made it worth the new experience. However, I am a little disappointed that my pre-order got delayed after paying full price + shipping.

I am a huge Super Mario fan and own all of the games for Switch. That being said, this is the best of all the Mario games, aside from Mario Wonder. This game has a really engaging storyline and the gameplay is really unique without being too challenging. It’s a good game for all ages!!

Being a fan of the Paper Mario series for many years but never having access to too many Gamecube games, I only ever got to hear others talk about this game. They said it's a highlight of the series and now, being able to play it myself, I have to say I agree.
