About this product
This is the big one. The culmination of something, we're not sure what. Questlove's association with David Murray goes back decades, to a live performance in London and an appearance on an early Roots record. Questlove's association with Ray is somewhat more recent but no less profound. As Questlove expanded his achievements and fame from musician to entrepreneur to author to Academy Award winning filmmaker to cultural icon, he's always highlighted and collaborated with creatives he deems worthy. After hearing about our tag during his work with Steve Mandel, he decided WE were worthy of his time as one of his creative homes. So it was, that on one day in late Summer, 2022, Quest, David and Ray, with no rehearsal or planning, sat down in Reservoir Studios, took their places at their instruments, and for the next few hours locked into some of the most otherworldly music we've heard. When the recording session was over and the musicians left, it was like a typhoon came through. Everything was changed. We can't go back. We don't want to either. 4 LP's come in a plum-colored velvet box with booklet and inserts. Ships in early 2024. Album Tracks 1. Plumb 2. Intro to Ninno/Ninno 3. Pleiades 4. Atomic Number 5. Scalene 6. Orgone Pyramid 7. 5 Minute Joint 8. False Dawn 9. Love 10. Light 11. Pink Noise 12. Whet 13. Brown Doves 14. Mondays

After JMI-1 and 2, we pretty much thought Ray can do any type of recording and make it great. That led us to think hard, always a dangerous proposition we need to be as direct as possible at making our point that Ray is a top pianist! Solo piano. That great tradition from Art Tatum through Keith Jarrett always was the most powerful to elicit the InchwowsInch. And so one day in the fall of 2022, Ray came to Reservoir Studios, sat down at the Steinway piano that was delivered for him (by Steinway) and barely got up for the next two hours. There are some experiences which defy words. Listening to Ray a torrent of music quite unlike anything we've heard, was one such event. The pieces were part classical, part jazz, part pop and all Ray. We couldn't bear to leave one note unreleased so... The first JMI box set, in which Ray will join Mr. Jarrett as a rare talent who can make you totally forget you're hearing solo piano because his music suffuses the mind with less earthbound sensations. Cover once again shot by Jill Greenberg and deluxe booklet with writings by Questlove and Black Thought, among others, included. Album Tracks 1. Desiree 2. Outrageous Love 3. Song for the Ancestors 4. Round Midnight/No Space No Time 5. Beautiful Horizon 6. Mother's Love 7. Fatherson 8. The Hill 9. Generous King 10. In the End, We Win 11. Everything Dilla 12. After This 13. Prince, Where R U 14. There Is No, There Is No (Dedicated to Rich Nichols) 15. (It's So Natural) 16. Only for Love 17. Tough Times in the Rag Trade 18. Damper 19. God's Grace 20. Peace '26 21. Space Oddity 22. The Bear 23. Brothers 24. Rewind
Ray was so impressive during the making of JMI-1 that there was no decision on the leader for our next LP it had to be Ray. We put together the best players we could to match Ray's advanced playing and composition Blue Note leaders Derrick Hodge and Ambrose Akinmusire on bass and trumpet, respectively; and Eric Harland and Myron Walden on drums and horns. The cover was shot by noted photographer Jill Greenberg, who pioneered the Inchheat treatmentInch photo style. One was named one of Rolling Stone's top 10 jazz releases of 2018 and Ray appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in October, 2018 to promote it. Album Tracks 1. Nebula 2. Number One Love 3. It Might Be Gold 4. Musique Mecanique III 5. Bjork City 6. Bleeding Heart 7. Circles Inside You 8. Jake-Ism 9. Gamma Ray
