Stallone sings country....
Ok, you have a talented director, hot off his classic film, A Christmas Story, a great leading man and a fantastic country singer making a comedy. Well, you could say it has the potential to be a good movie, but so much goes wrong. Dolly Parton is a country singer under a cruel contract by her sleasy manager, desperate for freedom. He makes a bet with her, saying the next person he sees, she will have to make him a country singer. Enter Sylvester Stallone, a NYC cabbie who is seen, and she is forced to get him to be a singer or else have the contract extended. Hijinx ensues with not a lot of laughs. Bob Clark has made some classics, but he's also made some stinkers before his untimely death well over a decade ago. Loose Cannons, Baby Geniuses, Baby Geniuses 2, and a few others that stain his filmography, and this probably falls in line with those losers. While Rhinestone isn't that bad of a movie, and certainly better than the ones I listed above, this isn't a good movie. Stallone and Parton are likable enough, but he just can't sing country songs well (I dunno if he can sing at all, truth be told) and their chemistry isn't the strongest either. The soundtrack should be filled with some winners, but it's largely a forgotten slew of original songs written by Dolly herself. Sad being she is one of the great writers of country music. Stallone can work in a comedy, but the screenplay doesn't play to his strengths, unlike something like Tango and Cash or Demolition Man. The only pluses are seeing Stallone trying to belt out the song "Drinkenstein" while wearing a goofy outfit of a ten-gallon cowboy hat and the upholstery of a 1976 Davenport that was dyed puke. Hilarious. Bob Clark just doesn't seem inspired to deliver a comedy that is truly funny, just thinking that Stallone singing is funny enough. Moving to the DVD itself, the picture and sound quality are pretty decent enough, but nothing the write home about. The picture is clean and stable enough, with the dark scenes showing an uptick in film grain, but is otherwise a clean picture, surprised that it looks this good despite the critical and box office failure of the film almost 40 years ago. The sound is, again, decent, but not enough to rock the house off the foundation. The 2.0 track feels like stereo well enough, and the dialogue and songs come through well, but a nice 5.1 remaster could've helped with the songs a bit. The true failure of the DVD is the lack of meaningful extras, with the trailer the only thing included. An interview or a commentary would be nice, but this is all we get. Overall, it's a bad comedy with a decent picture and sound quality, but the lack of extras really drive home that this one isn't worth it unless you need every Stallone film on your shelves.

Stallone becomes country singer...
The header pretty much sums it up. Yes, on a bet to get out of a contract, Parton must turn the next person she sees as a country music star or else extend her contract indefinitely. Surprisingly, its not as terrible as it sounds, with a few funny bits and such, but when he starts singing.... Well at least he had fun making the movie I guess. The acting is okay, bur with a nice cast and a good director behind the lens I expected more. The DVD has okay picture, but with some grain spikes in darker scenes, and the audio pretty good but nothing special but the lack of extras, even a trailer, is a big letdown.

Rhinestone- Diamond in the rough
The premise is bad, the acting is bad , and the singing is even worse. That is what makes this movie so laughably bad, and yet so entertaining to watch. If you love campy cinema, this one is for you.
