Q: does dvi provide video only or video and audio?
A: video only.... you can use RCA (red and white cables) for your audio.
Q: Will this work for HDMI output from a laptop to DVI input of a monitor?
A: I am doing exactly that. I have a new Malibal Gaming laptop that I also use for work, and it only has HDMI output. The monitors at the site I am working at only have DVI cables coming out or VGA so I got this converter and plugged it into the end of the DVI cable and plugged the adapter directly into the HDMI port of my laptop. Works perfect. I wrote this answer using this setup ;)

A: this is actually used to go from HDMI to a DVI source unless you are using it to plug a computer to a TV where the HDMI port is receiving the image.
Q: Can this connect an Xbox, to a DVI Monitor?
A: It may but be sure the ends are correct. There are 2 styles for female and male connections. I needed a female DVI end for my Acer Laptop. This one is male on both ends.

Q: Why would this stop working after about an hour's use?
A: I have a Monster Cable adapter that is DVI to HDMI and it works fine. Honestly there is no reason for your adapter to fail....ever! Try looking for another reason it is not the adapter. It probably is a problem with one of the two components that are attached. Good luck!
