This replaced my old Whirlpool 27.9 cubic foot refrigerator. The size was comparable and the most attractive (and, in my opinion, the smartest feature EVER) is the flex zone. Having the extra space to switch between fridge and freezer is brilliant! The regular fridge space is decent enough for a household of five; however, the engineers that designed the shelving layout must not have children who drink milk and must only purchase the travel size of condiments and various bottles of sauces. The shelves as delivered fall JUST short of fitting a gallon of milk (to be fair, we go through 5-7 gallons a week so we always have 2-3 on hand). There is space on the door for one which has become the default home for this food item. The other shelves had to be adjusted to fit the extra containers. Another downside is that the door compartments can't be adjusted at all...again, they were JUST shy of holding our various salad dressings, ketchup bottles, and applesauce jars. With the extra flex zone storage, we were able to find the new home's for these well-used items but a negative would be the lack of configuration. Cooling is great! I read complaints prior to purchasing about the ice capacity but haven't had an issue yet. One surprise was the lack of a water collection tray under the dispenser. The inevitable drips just collect in a depression so I'm finding my obsessive-compulsive side coming out and I'm constantly wiping up drips to keep it clean. Seems like a small addition that would have gone a long way. As I indicated, the fridge is HUGE. I had double-checked my measurements to make sure it would fit. It is a little deeper with the gadgets in the door which accounts for the extra door thickness. The installers had no problem removing the doors prior to hauling it into the house. The door hinge fastening mechanism is pretty slick and easy to use.
The touchscreen is very impressive and the first thing you notice. The display is clear and very responsive. I honestly don't use most of the apps. The only ones that we use are the calendar integration (all family members post and share Google calendar from their mobile phones), the weather app, Pandora/TuneIn for playing music in the kitchen. Side note, the speakers are very nice and the sound fills the room. Nicely done Samsung, you didn't skimp here! Deals is a nice app as well and is on a secondary screen. It monitors local store adds and displays specials. Saves thumbing through weekly circulars. The photo gallery is also nice (our old fridge was plastered with photos held on w/magnates) A magnate will NEVER touch this surface for fear of scratching it! Being able to send pictures from my phone to the fridge is convenient and easy. If you don't have all Samsung smart devices, the home integration is non-existent. It would be nice to incorporate Alexa or Google Assistant. I have tons of smart devices controlled by Google (Lights, Nest products, garage door, etc.). None of those can be connected to the fridge. The "Hi Bixby" feature works pretty well but I don't really use it as I believe Samsung intended. I get their concept of trying to make the fridge the centerpiece of the home but I'd rather be sitting on my couch speaking to Google than standing in front of my fridge. It's great for to-do's (I set up one for feeding the dog in the am and another for the pm. At any time someone can check to see if it's been checked off or not, as well as things like garbage night and house chores). The camera is a nice feature that I have used while out shopping to quickly check if we needed more eggs (or milk!). You have limited view of the main area so you can't get a complete picture of what's in there but it's still a nice feature. The shopping list and tagging items that expire is too clunky to use on a regular basis. It would be easier if the phone app could scan a bar-code and then automatically add that item to the contents. Having to stand in front of the fridge pecking away at a keyboard is not fun and I feel a little silly doing it LOL (like I said, I'd rather be sitting on my couch).
The comment that stands out the most was from one of my teenage son's who said "this cost more than my car!". I brushed off the comment and said "if you work hard (and get a darn job!) you can afford something like this in the future" but when I thought about it, it is A LOT to pay for an appliance. If I had to do it over, I still would. It's a very impressive appliance with all the modern technology. The black stainless finish is really sexy looking. We got the matching stove and microwave and the suite looks totally awesome. Time will tell regarding its reliability but this is something that an extended warranty is a must (too much that can go wrong!). In summary, I'm glad I purchased this product. No regrets. Some room for improvements on shelf/door configurations would bump this to 5 stars. That's really the only negative worth mentioning. Hopefully, Samsung will provide regular software updates to the fridge (and mobile app) to add new features. p.s. I haven't had any network connectivity issues (but I am a geek and my home network is pretty tight)
