Firmware update = a bit of a pain for PS5
The drive that I received was manufactured in Dec 2021 and had ~300 GB written on it previously (reformatted by BestBuy, of course). I wanted the latest firmware before installing into my PS5, so I reached out to Geek Squad (as a TotalTech member), but they didn’t have any means of updating the firmware at my local store. The person helping me suggested buying a laptop, updating the firmware, and then returning the laptop lol. Fortunately, I was able to disassemble my wife’s existing laptop and complete the update myself. Installed the drive into our PS5 and benchmarked 6,500 MB/s. It’s worth noting that you cannot use an external enclosure to update firmware with your PC. Samsung’s Magician software will not recognize the drive as a Samsung product unless it is connected directly to the motherboard.
