The BRAVIA Theater Rear 9's are a great pair of surround speakers to complete the Sony theater experience. These rears really help fortify the 360 Spatial Sound that the Theater Trio starts. Plug them in and use the BRAVIA Connect app to complete the paring to your system and listen how the sound fills the room. I have tested on a few movies and the 360 Spatial sound adds an amazing level of immersion to the viewing experience. The sound is crisp and clear and really does appear to be coming from all around. The build quality is also amazing and photos do not prepare you for the size of these rears. They measure in at 11" high and roughly 6" in diameter. What I found interesting is the wall mounting bracket actually allows the speakers to be swiveled to better direct the rear sound to your seating arrangement, this is not something I have seen included with other rears. Wireless connectivity has been pretty solid and I have only noticed a couple of signal dropouts which were quickly resolved (and probably my fault). Overall these rears are a must have if you are looking for that cinematic surround sound in you viewing room.

At first i was skeptical at adding rear speakers but the ambiance it adds to not only movies but also music streaming. There are sounds in songs I've never heard before thanks to these speakers. Would recommend. Very easy to sink up with the soundbar and sub woofer.

I recently upgraged my entire sound system from HTT-5 5.1 soundbar with sub and rear wireless speakers when I purchased a tv recently. The speakers and soundbar are installed and I can already tell the difference in the sound quality due to technology changes. I'm looking forward to adding the Sub 9.

It’s makes the listening experience so much more immersive. The background music just surrounds you. Once again the required Bravia app brings aggravation to the set up and optimization process as it can disconnect quickly

If you want to stop just watching a movie and actually feel like you’re sitting right in the middle of it, the Rear 9 surround speakers are the missing puzzle piece. We wanted sound effects to actually move over and behind us rather than just hitting us from the front. Putting these behind the couch changes the whole experience—when rain falls or a plane flies across the screen, the sound moves seamlessly through the air around you. It really does feel like you are in a movie theater from the comfort of your own couch. They are definitely an expensive add-on, but they completely change the atmosphere of the room. The Bravia app makes setup and configuration simple. It does a basic tuning, and then uses the mic on your smartphone to fine tune the sound for your exact sitting location. Very cool and very effective! Here's my take on the good and the not so good. The Good: Upward firing speakers do a great job making sound feel like it's coming from the ceiling. It completely wraps the audio around your seat so you're fully immersed. Comes with handy wall mounts that let you angle them perfectly. Plug-in power means you never have to worry about batteries dying mid-movie. The Not So Good: A lot of extra money to spend just for the rear channels. No battery option means you are forced to place them near wall outlets. Hiding the power cords can take some planning. They aren't small...you will notice them on your wall The Bigger Picture: These rear satellites are only meant to handle background ambiance and surrounding effects, so they can't function as a standalone system. They completely depend on the Bravia Trio to deliver the main soundtrack and dialogue, and they need the Sub 9 to provide the low-end bass thump and rumble that these smaller rear blocks can't replicate on their own.

Good Rear speakers are a must to complete the true surround sound feel in your setup! Feeling the arrows or gunshots wiz by your ears in intense movie scenes pulls you into the scene that much more when done come correctly! But finding a good place to put these speakers in limited space can be tricky sometimes! Enter the new wireless BRAVIA Theater Rear 9 speakers from Sony! The last piece of the puzzle to my new home theater setup! Initial setup with these speakers was a breeze just like the Trio and Sub 9’s before it. The BRAVIA connect app found the rear 9’s instantly and added them to my setup. Once connected we took advantage of the new 360 Spatial Mapping Technology. It’s an impressive process where through the phone you tell it exactly where you’re sitting in the room with a microphone provided by Sony and it spatial maps “phantom” speakers using the Rears and all the other speakers combined to create an immersive circle of speakers around you. The beautiful thing about Sony’s technology is the speakers don’t necessarily have to be perfectly positioned. I have one in the back right corner and another right by my wife’s desk. It was the best place in the room and because you can directly fire them depending on where you’re sitting, it works perfectly! I eventually will mount them on the wall with the rotating mounts provided, but the wireless aspect makes it super easy for placement. Together with the Trio and the Sub 9 this combo forms a powerhouse of a sound system. The Rears 9 do a great job of adding substance to the music or movie playing with the up-firing speakers and spatial mapping. It is worth noting that the Field Optimization button in the Bravia connect app does need to be on for the back speakers to work and there’s limited volume control so far, but I imagine that will be changed with future updates to the app! Overall, these speakers are a great addition to the Bravia Theater Trio! With the Sub 9 and the Rear 9’s together, you have a complete surround system that’s flexible and easy to use in any family room! I highly recommend the system together, or if you just have a Bravia TV these Rear 9’s are compatible with that as well! Our family will enjoy this setup for years to come!

Having come from using the RS5 surround speakers for a couple of years, I was excited to see what the new Rear 9's would bring to the table, and I have been very happy with what I've experienced. Compared to the RS5 speakers, these are actually much taller and bigger than I expected, which makes sense from both the power and driver changes. The biggest change for me is that these are no longer battery-powered and so come with just a regular plug to connect to an outlet rather than the external power brick (albeit a small one) that the RS5s had. While this may be less flexible for some people, I think going back to fully AC-powered speakers allows them to push the speaker drivers more readily. Speaking of the speaker drivers, there has been one massive upgrade compared to the old ones in the upfiring speaker. To my eyes, they appear to be at least double the size of the ones on the old set of speakers, which you can immediately tell when playing back Spatial Audio content such as Atmos; there's a much greater sense of presence and precision compared to the previous, though still great performance. For the rest of the surround and rear channels, performance has been upgraded as well with a more balanced playback and passover of audio as things pan behind you, though I'm sad they seemed to have abandoned the X-Balance drivers they pioneered in the previous generation, which feels like it would have added even more performance. Another huge addition this year is the ability to directly connect the rear speakers to a compatible tv (mostly 2025 and 2026 TVs) without a soundbar or control box. This IMO is the biggest upgrade they could have added, as this is an option I've wanted for years specifically with the Sony OLEDs with their acoustic surface speakers. While I haven't yet had the chance to try this direct connection, I can see this adding a lot of value to someone that is happy with the onboard sound but is looking for that extra sense of immersion from the rear. Overall, I think these are a very good upgrade on what has come before with a more immersive sound, especially for Spatial Audio.

Hello Ardy,
Thank you for choosing Sony!
We couldn't be happier to hear your thoughtful insights on the new rear SARS9 speakers. Your detailed comparison with the SARS5 highlights the meaningful improvements, especially the larger upfiring drivers and the shift to AC power, which indeed help deliver a richer and more immersive Spatial Audio experience. We appreciate your observation about the removal of the X-Balance drivers and understand how that feature was valued. The new ability to connect directly to compatible TVs is a significant advancement, and we’re glad you see its potential for enhancing immersion, especially with Sony OLEDs. Your feedback truly helps us continue to refine our products and deliver exceptional audio experiences.

The Sony BRAVIA Theater Rear 9 wireless surround speakers give you the rest of the sound needed to fill out your room. At 12” high, and 6” across they aren’t small USB powered speakers. With the regular outlet plug you are getting full power to a 3 speaker device with front and top firing speakers. They even some with wall mounts. Each speaker is about 10 pounds, so make sure you securely mount them. With the Bravia app setup and connection is easy. During the initial setup, or after for your control unit, add them with the app. After plugging them in and syncing them as directed you will have rear surround and height for your system. The black is nice and matches the other units, a Bravia Theater 9 and subwoofer nicely. Once sync you are ready to hear the rest of your sound. There is one light in the front, but is not too bright or noticeable. Once setup you can adjust the rear volume or use the Bravia app optimizer and let the program set your levels. These do what rear speakers should. Action surrounds you and immerses you in the movie or music. Sound is crisp and never distorted. Sound comes from all angles and lets you hear everything. With Atmos and other surround encoding these speakers shine. Make sure you have the room for them and give them some space and they will be great. The plug length is just under 8’. Plenty of room to find an outlet. Then being wireless you are set. They are powerful enough to deliver no matter what you are listening too. They work for a variety of Sony soundbars and receivers. Incorporating them into you set will help fill out your soundstage and listening enjoyment.
