Sony has always been top for home audio and video from their new RGB TV’s and their new sound systems they slacked in the SUB area with the previous top model being the SW5 which I had paired with my Bravia theater quad system. The quad system itself is amazing but has no bass and the SW5 added little excitement. Now we get the new gen with the SW9 which has two facing 8” drivers similar to Sonos which actually cancels out cabinet vibrations. Adding the SW9 to my quads was easier than I expected as I thought I’d have to disconnect the SW5 from the app and load the SW9 and recalibrate but none of that was needed. Just plug and go. Now for the sound. My goodness this changed everything. The system must get 30% louder and the sub is capable of low tones I had not heard from Sony before. A crisp clean bass thump that sounds well defined and punchy. Not only does this speaker perform great, it looks great as well. Action scenes provided a more robust engagement and music with bass seemed reconstructed over the system when I had the SW5 going. All clean bass without distortion. You can read other reviews for stats this is solely based on listening and the difference between the SW5 and SW9. Downside with the quads they currently only support one sub while the newer Bravia trio supports two. My living room is large and one sub is good but 2… that would be a great option. Overall fantastic speaker all the way around that you need if you have the quads or trio.

Been using it for about a month, Paired with a theater Bar 9 and RS5 rears. Previously had the SW5 sub from the last generation, always felt it didn't have enough punch. Its not even close, this new Sub 9 blows that one out of the water. This sub goes really deep and the bass has a lot of Nuance. its just not waiting around, it actually support the main sound in the background and takes over when it needs to. It helps to add a lot of body to the sound which was missing in the SW5. There is an option to use 2 subs , don't think that is need except if you have a really large space as 1 is powerful enough. Watched movies like Fury, Pacific Rim ,Ready player one , Star trek , transformers , Blade runner and the impact this Sub produces has the room shaking. U feel the air moving in your chest. This is the true Cinema sub. Very pleased with my purchase. Get it ASAP

Upgraded from the SW5. No comparison. The Sony Sub 9 is miles ahead of the SW5. Ended up picking up two of them to pair with my theater bar 9. Words can’t explain how awesome my home theater sounds now. If you’re debating on upgrading from an older sub model such as the SW5, do it!!

I am using this with dual sub 9s and acoustic channel sync with a 75" Bravia 7 II TV. The two subs together with the theater bar 9 and the TV speakers create a sound stage as close to being at a live concert as I have heard. I realize that some will think dual sub 9s is overkill; but they are perfectly matched and perfectly balanced with the bar. The sound quality is seamless from the highest highs to the lowest lows with no booming, thumping or buzzing. I have played bass heavy music and singers who approach the upper limits of human hearing. This system is flawless over the entire range.

This is part II of a three-part review for the Sony Bravia Theater series of products. Please see my reviews for the Bravia Theater Trio and Bravia Theater Rear 9 for my complete review. Initial Thoughts: Finally, a real subwoofer! And it is glorious. If you are purchasing any of the Sony Bravia Theater products then this is the subwoofer you want. Do not accept anything less. Go with two if you really want to elevate your game. Setup and Configuration First, this is a heavy box. If you are not comfortable lifting 50lb, then you will want some help. Wherever you place this sub is where it will live. It is not moving. There are only two pieces to the Sub 9; power cord and subwoofer. The Sub 9 is a cube measuring 15 3/8 x 15 3/4 x 13 3/4 in. The Sub 9 has dual opposing 200mm (7.9 Inch) drivers facing each other. This is a fully vented design with the air flow traveling down the middle of the box with exits at the front and the rear. The Sub 9 is compatible with an array of current Sony home theater products including the Theater and HT series sound bars, the Theater Quad, and even Sony’s own AVR lineup. Which really allows you to up your game if you currently own any of these products. This is especially true, in my opinion, with any of the soundbar products. For my setup, I integrated the Sub 9 into my Bravia Theater system. Using my iPhone, the Bravia app recognized the Sub 9 and synced it with the Theater Trio within a matter of seconds. Once synced, I ran the Bravia Connect room correction app on my iPad with the calibration mic that shipped with the Theater Trio. The Sub 9 was synced, time aligned and integrated into the Theater system in about five minutes. The benefits of adding the Sub 9 were immediate. Music, vocals, action scenes, Godzilla’s roar, and Call of Duty finally commanded attention, emotion, and provided weight to my content. The Sub 9 also did an excellent job of pressurizing my small room. The Bravia Trio remote control, and the Bravia app, allow for increasing and decreasing the bass volume. From the app, I can also boost the bass. This is good for those times when I want a little extra punch. Placement: For my room, the best placement was mid-wall instead. I could have teased more base out of the Sub 9 by corner loading the subwoofer. Unfortunately, that option is available to me due to the room’s furniture layout. Instead, I chose to place the Sub 9 along my right side wall about 1/3 of the room’s distance from the front wall. I left about six inches between the back of the Sub 9 and my wall. As mentioned in my Theater Trio review, I rode the bass volume control both via remote control and Bravia Connect app every time I switched between public TV, streaming, video games, 4K movies, and on and on and on. The Sub 9, itself, is perfectly fine. The software driving the system has a lot of room for improvement. For example, watching the World Cup game, Spain vs Argentina, the sub did a fantastic job fantastic. The sub was mostly idle during the game but came alive at half-time for the few commercials aired during the game. I got some good bass, beats, and that underlying foundation to the musical presentation that most performances rest upon. After the game, I switched over to my 4K players to watch Godzilla: King of Monsters. This time, I had to turn off THX, Bass Boost, and lower the Sub 9 volume to -4. Overall, Godzilla sounded big, grounded, and dangerous. The other monsters were also fun to watch. Again, once the system was dialed in, the sub vanished and there was only immersive content. I did turn off the sub a few times. The impact was immediate and obvious. It was like all the air was let out of the room when the sub was off. Finally, the Sub 9 does not come equipped with good floor isolation feet. The floor was rumbling, plates were clattering, and the walls were humming with the bass energy that was going into the floor. This is the first best way to upset everyone in the house or apartment and the your neighbors. If you do go with the Sub 9 then I recommend either isolation feet or a small isolation platform. You will get better, tighter bass while also increasing your neighbor acceptance factor. Video Games: I stream my Xbox through my TV. From the TV, game sound is transmitted via HDMI eARC to the Bravia Trio center channel. And from the center channel to the rest of the system. Changing over from Godzilla to Call of Duty, just like switching between other content, I was forced to ride the remote control and the Bravia App to dial in the system. Once dialed in, Call of Duty was pretty awesome! The Sub 9 provided punch to my gun shots, solid weight to grenade explosions, awe to my air strikes, and did a decent job of pressurizing my room with low frequency hum of the battlefield. I found it very immersive. The Sub 9 also did a good job of supporting surround effects such as heavy footsteps and the distant sounds of combat from clear across the map. Overall, the Sub 9 did a great job. Music: Just like with Godzilla and Call of Duty on my Xbox, I had to re-adjust the speaker and subwoofer output for my music. I streamed everything from Jazz to Classical to Classic Rock to K-Pop over Apple Airplay from my iPad. The subwoofer did an excellent job supporting the music regardless of what content I threw at it. However, I did find myself riding the bass volume controls more often as I switched from genre to genre. For reference, I have a dedicated stereo system with a dedicated sub that I calibrated one time. And that system has never needed to be recalibrated regardless of what genre of music I throw at it. This is a Sony software problem that Sony needs to address. The musical experience was very pleasing once the Sub 9 was dialed in. Final Thoughts: First, I am happy to see that Sony is finally adding a real subwoofer to a consumer level home theater audio solution. The downside is that the only brand this subwoofer works with is Sony. The good news is that Sony has worked the Sub 9 into its sound bars, the Theater Trio, and even their AVR product lines. Meaning, when you are ready to grow, then the Sub 9 will grow with you. What I do not like is constantly riding the Bravia Connect app and the bass volume control as if it was some grotesque interactive game. The Sub 9 subwoofer is a quality subwoofer for the money. It does a fantastic job of pressurizing the room. And it does a fantastic job of supporting the rest of my Bravia wireless theater. The software, however, needs a usability and quality of life pass. I upgraded to the Sub 9 from SA-SW5 on my Quad System. Definitely a huge upgrade on the Bass and sound quality! The bass sounds much more powerful, deeper, and clearer. The upgrade was well worth it at the $599 sale price I was able to get it at. I honestly don’t think I would have paid the full $900 for it. Hopefully the Quad system software gets updated to support 2 Sub 9’s on the system. The sub is very easy to set up and use. It is noticeably bigger than the SW5 but I’m definitely getting used to it! I highly recommend this sub if your system supports it!!

This was packed up real nice. Nothing was damaged and the packaging came with enough padding to keep the contents from moving around during transit. I must say the Bravia Theatre Sub 9 really had some weight to it. It all made sense after turning it on because it sounded amazing. The setup was as easy as plugging in the power plug and pushing the sync button. Pretty much everything can be done on the app for settings. The Bravia also features the Bluetooth and the AirPlay so it’s easy to send any device sound to the speakers. The sub 9 packs a good bass with just the default settings but it can be adjusted to a more heavy bass. I get the deep bass with no sound distortion. It’s always nice to have an added bass to give the added effects of movies and music. The sub 9 delivers in every aspect, it can be placed anywhere in the room and gives the same quality of sound. This is a must to complete the Bravia 9 soundbar or any compatible Sony sound system to have the best experience in the comfort of your home.

The BRAVIA Theater Sub 9 brings the bass punch you are probably missing. The Sub 9 and its dual subwoofers is a giant step up when compared to most other wireless subs on the market. When paired with the Theater Trio it really shines adding to an already great system this sub brings the thing that the other speakers cannot really replicate too well. Its a very well designed sub. It looks stunning and is very very heavy. Unboxing suggests team lifting heavy. The bass produced is clear and through my use has not been muffled or weak. I have had subs in the past from some other manufactures that required me to set the level to its almost maximum, but with this sub I have had no such need. The wireless connection has been very stable without any noticeable drop-out. If you have a Sony system and need some additional boom for your room, I can highly recommend picking this up (with a helper) and adding it to your set-up. AND if you want extra BOOM you can pair TWO of these with the Theater Trio.....

I previously own the SW3 sub which was pretty underwhelming. It did not have a good low-end and was not tight or controlled. I felt it was even worse than its predecessor that came from the HT-ST5000. However, the sub 9 was just leaps and bounds above the SW3 or SW5. It was powerful, loud and not uncontrolled. I paired it with the Bar 9, and after room calibration at bass level -4, the sub was impressively powerful while not being too blooming in movies. You can feel the tanks rolling on the ground with this sub. However, bass level at -4 was generally a bit too strong for music and at -5 was a bit too silent. I wish Sony would include Auto EQ for the sub as well, or at least provide us with a more granular control in terms of bass volume. One last point: please pay attention to the Phase setting for this sub as it could affect the overall response quite significantly. From my observation, if you place this sub horizontally (the opening in the middle was sideways), you have to use Type 2. If you place it like the product picture (the opening in the middle facing you), you should use Type 1. I own an SVS 3000 Micro for my music listening setup, and with the Sub 9, I finally felt like I didn't miss much from bass.

It looks cool, it sounds great. The only weak point is the Bravia app that Sony requires to set it up. The app frequently disconnects and is hot garbage for something being tied to such pricy Sony products

After using Sonos and Samsung subs I wanted something more powerful which is exactly what Sony to delivered with the SW9. This subwoofer is very clean and tight and has a very focused and powerful impact and needed. I do wish Sony would have gone the extra mile and released a more theatrical portage subwoofer with a larger speaker to satisfy the home theater crowd but this subwoofer is about as good as it gets for a sound bar type sub.

I bought the Bravia 9 soundbar and wireless 9 rear speakers with this when I upgraded my TV recently. The overall sound experience has been awesome and the bass has not disappointed. The speaker is bigger than others but it is well built and do not think that it takes up a massive amount of space.

Great sub. Integrates well with the Sony TV and soundbar, great sound. Sleek looking. Would def recommend. Love that it is wireless other than power cable.

This sub9 is awesome and a much needed upgrade from SW5 it hits harder on every level than the SW5 & completely changes the dynamics of the Sony theater quad & theater trio, there is no "if", "ands" or "buts"if you are even remotely considering the Sony theater quad or the Sony theater trio then the Sub9 is a MUST! Plse believe me! It now even competes with Sonos Sub4. & Can even be more devestating at times than the Sonos sub4.

This subwoofer delivers floor rumbling bass during movies that impact the watching experience in a great way. A must have for movie enthusiasts.

This sub is no joke! Adds a whole new level to the Quad theater. You not only hear the bass, but you feel it as well.

Had the SW5 with my Quad, the entire system opens up so much more with SW9 sub now. Highly recommend
