From start to finish this movie was great. From top dog to underdog and from Underdog to being on top once again. Southpaw is a great buy.

Southpaw isn't content with presenting a gallery of clichéd characters. It takes the time to put flesh on the bones.

This sports movie is a superbly well-casted boxing story set in New York City but it is a very “tough” view that is also filled with harsh street language. The 2nd half of the story is a much different up-lifting view of the primitive and visceral side of boxing. It’s a story of hope and redemption and a fighter learning to become a father. This moving-picture captures with authenticity the intensity of the fight game in the boxing ring – it doesn't stop until the sound of the “bell”! And it’s a saga of the human cost of rebuilding a "busted-down" boxer back to champion status. It explores the “rage” of the ring and the importance of controlling it in order to win along with the need of both family bond and mutual support to form the chemistry of winning the boxing game.

For so many reasons this movie more than likely will not get the attention it deserves. But it is very moving. I thought this would be another knock off Rocky Balboa movie and I was wrong. If Jake Gyllenhaal ever worked hard enough for an Oscar this would be the movie I think he should get it for. I always make fun of my wife for crying during movies. This was the first time I had to hold back tears! This is a very emotional roller coaster underdog story. Very well shot, amazing cast and just when you need a moment to get your man card back your caught in the roaring bliss of a Eminem track! 5 stars all the way!

I am in no way interested in boxing. I actually was cleaning the house and had the tv on and this movie started playing. I had to stop cleaning because I was so engrossed in this film. It has such a powerful story line I found myself cheering for Billy during his matches, and feeling sorrow for him during tragedy after tragedy that he faces. There's lots of action, lots of tears, and when it was over I had to go out and buy it so I stopped at Best Buy to purchase this film. This is a must-watch movie and even if you don't like boxing (such as myself), you will enjoy this movie.

If you watch the trailer, you assume you've seen the film, which may feel like it when you actually watch the film. However, what I found great about this movie were the characters. I wouldn't consider myself a Jake Gyllenhaal fan by any means as I've seen him in a few films here and there, but I really enjoyed his performance. It felt believable and authentic. It was interesting watching this character's journey and how his actions and behavior not only affected his life but literally destroyed his family's. If you give this a chance, you'll recognize some story beats, especially found in sport/boxing films, but the character's journey is what I found most satisfying.

The main draw, is Gyllenhaal and for very good reason. Frankly, no one would have expected him to take the part of Billy Hope, which had originally been designed with rapper Eminem in mind. And yet, Gyllenhaal once again proves with Southpaw, as he has done with his consistently bold and off-kilter career choices, that he might very well be the finest actor of his generation. In a complete turnaround from his skeletal look in last year's Nightcrawler, he's practically unrecognizable as the beefed-up, mumbly Billy, burying his own slim frame and fine bone structure beneath layers of weight and muscle.

This is a fabulous movie, the storyline is incredible and the actors in this movie all are outstanding. It is not just a boxing movie but its about being on top and falling and going through struggles and after loss of loved ones and more this guy fought though it. The boxing is incredible it feels real and the cuts, bruises, I mean they didn't half do this movie at all they pulled out all the stops. Great movie, give it a watch.
