This game was awesome! I never played the original but I love the 2D-HD art style. It's a bit more detailed in graphical fidelity than Octopath Traver 1+2. As far as gameplay is concerned, it's an action rpg. I can compare it to how the Tales Of games are. The story is great and the voice acting is good. I had a couple of laughs during my playthrough. If you enjoy classic RPGs from the 90s, this won't dissapoint.

I played it when I was little didnt really know what was happening. Every so often I thought about buying a ps1 to play this game so when I saw it for the switch I instantly preordered it. And I can say I love it. I love the pixel graphics and the scenery is amazing.

Pros: Gorgeous HD-2D graphics blend classic pixel art with modern visuals Deeply engaging real-time combat with a mix of classic RPG elements Multiple endings and branching story paths for high replayability Excellent character development and unique companion system Refined user interface and streamlined mechanics improve on the original Cons: Some minor frame drops in busier areas Voice acting can be hit-or-miss for certain characters Difficulty spikes may frustrate newcomers

So I'm not much into JRPGs, mainly because of the music, over the top music, cringy dialogue, convoluted stories, and often turn based combat. This one, honestly, is a great entry point though. The combat is real time and simple (or as deep) as you want it. It looks really impressive for the switch 1. Story is fairly decent too. Music is a bit meh. The dialogue can be a bit cheesy, but passable. The reason for 5 stars though is that its a solid old game that I missed when I was younger and has now had an incredible makeover. Its fun, easy to get into, and is pleasing to look at. Easy to recommend for most people with a switch.

A masterpiece of a modern JRPG. Fun combat, engaging story and an awesome mixture of 3d with the pixel artwork

While I'm only about 10 hours into this one, Star Ocean: The Second Story R has shown itself to be a hidden JRPG gem of the PS1 era. Much like SquareEnix has done for Octopath Traveller and similar titles, the mash up of 2D sprites set against 3D environments looks simply amazing, especially in motion. The battle system seems simple at first, and battles move at a quick pace, but complexity is added on as you progress through the story, adding party members, spells, and summons. I wish there was an option to skip the underpowered battles, as the load times do add up when you're constantly running into meager fights, but the battle theme and the flashy animations keep things interesting. Lastly, the rerecorded dub (Spike Spencer of NGE fame is Clyde!!!), new score and character illustrations, and depth of the leveling system help this game make a real name for itself. Truly, its been a while since I've actually completed a JRPG, but I can see this one being a personal classic for years to come.

Amazing port; stays true to what makes star ocean tick. Still one of the best rpgs of all time. I would highly recommend getting this! Runs buttery smooth on switch.

This a great game if you like turn based RPG's. The quality of life enhancements are very nice in this game as well.

Star Ocean: The Second Story R takes the nostalgia of the PS1 and adds a nice coat of paint without sacrificing the integrity of the original art style. Pretty graphics, amazing sound, and a solid combat system, this game feels good whether you're at home, or somewhere, say on your lunch break. A must for classic JRPG fans.

This game is a masterpiece! The battle system was so ahead of it's time when it came out in the 90s. The story is fun, the characters are great, it is truly a work of art.

This was my first time playing this game. The character sprites and towns are beautiful, although the open world is fairly low-res and uninspiring. The battle mechanics are quite fun, with many options for party organization, commands and attacks. The skill-building opportunities are immense and great fun! Cons: the story overall is interesting, although the main character isn't particularly likeable and some members aren't well fleshed out. The game really engaged me through 40 hours, but dragged on a few hours too long beyond that and became either a grinding slog due to a difficulty spike (or a cheese fest to bypass this). Overall, I would recommend this game based on its merits, but don't quite put it in the highest tier of action RPGs.

A very well done remake, I can tell the developers were fans of the first one, my cat is a fan!

The game is great, runs well, and has awesome music. It should be a must buy if you have a switch, hopefully this sets the standard for remakes of older RPGs in the future!
