Sandwiched between the of Music of My Mind and Innervisions, Talking Book saw Wonder enjoying more artistic freedom from Motown. Guest appearances include Jeff Beck, Ray Parker, Jr., David Sanborn, and Buzz Feiten. The sound of the album is sharply defined by Wonder's keyboard work, especially with the synthesizers he incorporated, giving a funky edge to tracks like InchMaybe Your BabyInch. Along with the hit title track, the album also featured the hits InchHeaven Help Us AllInch, InchNever Had a Dream Come TrueInch and Wonder's cover of The Beatles' InchWe Can Work It OutInch. The album hit #25 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart as well as #7 on the R&B Albums chart. This was Wonder's first album on which he was given producer credit, though he actually only produced two of the tracks and co-produced three more. He wrote or co-wrote seven of the tracks.
