A breakout success, the album peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts, dominated radio waves with hits like InchS*x Type ThingInch and InchWicked Garden,Inch and has been certified 8x Platinum by the RIAA. The band also took home the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance for their smash single InchPlush.Inch Core, as a debut album, displayed the band's attempt to revive the album-oriented music approach of the 1970s. Striving to create an intense and emotional sound, vocalist Scott Weiland has said that the main theme of the album is that humanity is confused, with songs like InchS*x Type ThingInch and InchNaked SundayInch dealing with social injustice. Arguably their finest album, this follow-up to Opiate showcases Tool at their best, assisted by clean, crisp production, without the muddiness of Aenima. Edgy guitar riffs are complemented by spitting, heavy bass, especially on InchSoberInch and InchCrawl AwayInch. Lyrically, Tool are at their vitriolic best, targeting religious hypocrisy (InchIntolerance,Inch InchSoberInch; always a popular theme), the loss of innocence and it's consequences (InchPrison S*xInch), and deliberate ignorance (InchSwamp SongInch). Henry Rollins makes a guest appearance on InchBottom,Inch which, along with Inch4 Degrees,Inch deals with questions of identity. Songs for the Deaf is the third studio album by Queens of the Stone Age, originally released on August 27, 2002.
