Acid Jazz continues their exclusive licensing agreement with Albarika Store, the legendary record tag that defined the sound of Benin and influenced the entire region of West Africa and beyond. Recorded and issued in 1974, T.P. Orchestre - Poly Rythmo de Cotonou's Le Sato was one of the earliest releases on the tag, and it is also one of the deepest. Sato is the term for the traditional rhythms that soundtrack Vodun (Voodoo) rituals and ceremonies in Benin. Performance of Sato is reserved for these sacred rites, which evoke the spirits of the dead and can last for several days and attract hundreds of people. Sato rhythms cannot be played outside of Vodun. A large ceremonial Sato drum is used, which measured over 1.5m in height. This drum is played using wooden stick beaters, the drummer dancing while playing. The Sato drummers are supported by percussionists and other drummers playing smaller drums. The Senufo are an ethnic subgroup spread across Mali and Côte d'Ivoire that were studied intensely by French ethnomusicologist Michel de Lannoy, a specialist in West African music. Among the Senufo is a further subgroup of about 20,000 people called the Fodonon, who populate around fifteen villages in northern Côte d'Ivoire. Even in villages where they are the minority, Fodonon are regarded as masters of the land and rain. The Fodonon have fought to preserve their social and religious institutions, including the music of funeral ceremonies. These musical rituals can last several days, as the people share the burden and sorrow of death as a whole community. The most prominent instrument is the bologbogo, literally meaning Inchbig gourdInch and equipped with a single plucked string made of antelope hide.
