Season 4 is yet another in which skilled actors and a too-small staff of versatile writers are sometimes defeated by the producers' unwillingness or inability to obtain and spend the money that would make this series as good as it could and should be. Much of each episode consists of exciting, intelligent and deeply felt action and dialog. For example, scenes in the FBI offices and the Russian Embassy are wonderfully realistic and fascinating. But often they're followed by boring or disgusting, needlessly drawn out sequences in which characters stare morosely at each other, drive around slowly, vomit, hit others dozens of times, etc., far beyond what is necessary to make the scene's dramatic point and move the plot forward. The actors, all of whom are excellent, do their best with this intermittently thin material. But the result for viewers is a dispiriting see-saw between riveting drama and soporific filler created to feed the network the agreed upon number of viewing minutes in time for next week's episode. Once the season is on DVD, deadlines don't matter. But they do when the show is first broadcast. Quality suffers and scripts become uneven because a too small staff of writers constantly has to choose quantity over quality and deliver a set number of pages each week, regardless of how badly the weak scenes overshadow and tarnish the truly beautiful, exciting and memorable ones. Bottom line: This is a management problem; the staff is top-notch. Give them the headcount and financial support they need to consistently deliver the great shows they're clearly capable of.

It's great storytelling when you are rooting for the Russian bad guys. History tells you how it will end but you are still drawn in and on the edge of your seat

Comrades, if you haven't been watching this show from the start you must tear yourself await from all the sad reality dreck on television and watch this show. The characters are fully developed and back stories are continuously being developed without sacrificing the flow of the current plot each season. Frank Langella is perfectly cast and bring a certain gravitas to each episode he appears in. He is an actor who is absorbed by his characters, catch Robot and Frank or Dave to see this fine actor.

Fans of the show had to like Season 4, Like in real life, secrets are hard to keep on a good day, The Jennings have to keep up appearances from everybody it seems, for themselves as a couple , their FBI neighbor, the agency they work for, their own kids and so on, And still get the job done and dinner served. Now this season, their daughter is a player in this, her struggles with it are bad enough, but the agency now wants her to become a spy against the parents wishes to boot. Lets not forget she is a teenager who is starting to act like one.So now new wrinkles have been added to a proven formula, Can't wait to see what happens next.

I thoroughly enjoy this ongoing series. It dramatizes how the Soviets manipulated Americans in key positions to spy for Russia. And how these seemingly happy parents of American born children, threatened and cold-blooded murdered American scientists and govt leaders to obtain America's most vital secrets, even committing seduction of a 15-year-old girl in order to plant a listening bug in her VIP father's brief case. A chilling look into the minds of ruthless spies who will stop at nothing to eventually to fundamentally transform the US into a communist state.

Never had a chance to watch this show. Buying the whole series based on the good reviews.

I have been following the Americans since it first began and it has never disappointed me. While most series start running out of ideas by the second or third season, the writers and actors on The Americans continue to be creative, resourceful, imaginative, and intellectually challenging. The main two actors playing the Russian agents based in the U.S. get better and better. The series directors and producers always get amazing co-stars that add so much. The excellence continues throughout this fourth season.

Season 4 continues the suspense of how does an apparently average American married couple, who are really very effective and at times brutal Soviet Union era spies planted in America, keep their cover. It maintains that suspense well and adds to it the tension of their American teen age daughter realizing that her parents aren't just typical American parents. The leading actors, Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, perform their roles superbly.

The 4th season of the "The Americans" is a very well done set of DVDs. My only complaint is that I wish that it had been on Blu-ray rather standard DVD but I guess they don't sell enough to justify the extra cost. This is a realistic, plausible set of circumstances Soviet sleeper agents could have had to contend. Very well acted and one of my favorites. I heartily recommend it to every fan of spy and espionage dramas!

One of the top tv dramas continues to improve and get better. The cast is strong and work well together. The intensity in every situation is very enjoyable to watch. After Paige finds out about the situation about her parents i felt it would be a downfall but instead it has added so much more power to the story.Sometimes its hard not to understand where they are coming from with their mission. Great show

I've followed this intelligent television drama set during the 1980's during the Cold War from the very first season, and it has only become better and better. The story is about the trials and tribulations of two KGB agents posing as an American family. This fifth season is the prelude to the sixth and final season and it's definitely one of the best.

I love this show. I wish they would have blu-rays more available for this show, but the DVDs are fine to re-watch the series. This show is super under-rated in my opinion. I really don't know anyone else that watches it, even though I tell them to watch it. I have terrible friends. They just re-watch friends, but don't listen to theirs.

The Americans has been critically acclaimed every season since it started. It gets better and better and always involves brilliant acting and writing. The guest stars that it has every season also really add to the authenticity of this series. If you never watched this show, you truly are depriving yourself of the best of tv dramas.
