- Description: The Fabulous Sounds Of The Pacific Northwest [40th Anniversary Edition] / 40th anniversary reissue of their classic debut, remix from original 8-track tapes by Scott McCaughey - Original 15-track LP available on Limited Edition Turquoise Vinyl, double-CD/Digital expanded with 14 bonus tracks - On tour in 2024, including an appearance at Wilco's Solid Sound festival Formed (conceptually) by Scott McCaughey and Chuck Carroll in Seattle, WA in 1981, The Young Fresh Fellows, with the addition of Chuck's mad-drumming cousin Tad Hutchison, began work on their debut effort in 1983. Friend Conrad Uno volunteered to produce and record the trio in his basement/garage Egg Studios (no money exchanged hands), and Uno's fledgling tag PopLlama Products insisted on pushing the record out into the world, beyond a small circle of friends. Starting with the magical success of this album, PopLlama would become a fixture in the still-floundering Seattle music scene and the home of bands including Fastbacks, The Posies, Dharma Bums, and The President Of The United States Of America (whose Uno-produced debut would go on to be certified Triple Platinum by the RIAA.) Inspired by a 1960's single from Pacific Northwest Bell to promote tourism, the cover plays homage to that , with sound bites as InchnarratorInch from that original record (and now, either thankfully or regretfully, omitted from this cut-to-the-rock'n'roll-chase remix). The Fellows suddenly found themselves darlings of college radio, with an enthusiastic following, and admired by their peers. A bouncy, punky, jangly, and weirdly self-referential collection of songs, The Fabulous Sounds Of The Pacific Northwest became a favorite of anyone who came upon it, including early proponents like Paul Westerberg, Ira Robbins, NRBQ, Rolling Stone, and Peter Buck. Around the Fur the follow-up to Deftones' passionate, aggressive Adrenaline, sees the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work, adding new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. The opening InchMy Own Summer (Shove It),Inch serves as an introduction to the album's sonic theme sinewy guitars and eerie whispers alternate with fast, violent crunch. Sepultura's Max Cavallero contributes guitar and vocals to InchHeadup,Inch while InchMXInch finds singer Chino trading off vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, (wife of Deftones' drummer Abe) in an acerbic take on the rock star mentality. Vocal acrobat Moreno attacks a variety of styles his breathy, psychotic recitations sound downright industrial, while the album's calmer, more brooding moments show his gift for haunting melody. Behind him, guitarist Stephen Carpenter's heavy wall of sound is astoundingly muscular, yet inspiringly agile. When Deftones' hellish fury hits full tilt, as it always does on this album, Moreno's voice erupts into screams which are best described as otherworldly, transforming this intense musical firestorm into a hurtling juggernaut of aggression.
