This film from Hollywood's Golden Age presents a very thought-provoking story of the interaction, over time, between a widow and the ghost of a sea captain who haunts her seaside cottage. The plotline delicately deals with "haunting" questions such as: Can a living human fall in love with a deceased soul? Can the decedent love her in return? If so, what does that even mean? Where can it go? How can one prevent it, or stop it? How does it all end? The acting is, of course, first-rate, as one would expect from this cast (Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney). I was particularly impressed by Harrison's vocals: Unlike his fastidious manner of speech in My Fair Lady, his voice in this film is low and guttural, as befits a gruff pipe-smoking sea captain. Tierney's performance perfectly combines old-fashioned gentility with modern independence. The DVD played fine, but I then upgraded the quality to high-definition via Vudu's Disc-to-Digital program.

I remember watching this film as a child-I guess I was an old soul, because I loved & still love watching old films. And of course it was even more intriguing as a child because it involved the sea captain ghost. Gene Tierney Has always been a favorite movie star of mine & shines here with her co-star, Rex Harrison. Viewing this movie now as an adult, I see this movie as a beautiful love story & don’t think of it just as a ghost story as I did as a kid. The music score & cinematography are outstanding. And the ending is endearing-I won’t spoil the ending for those who have never seen it. You MUST see this movie!

A classic, "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" features a beautiful widow in search of a cottage by the beach for her and her daughter. She finds it and discovers the builder, a sea-captain, has died but still lives in it as a ghost. The sea-captain dictates a memoir to her primarily so she can get it published to earn enough to buy the cottage, which she does. When the widow meets another author and falls in love, the ghost leaves the cottage. Without giving away the ending, anyone who enjoys an unusual love story will enjoy this film.
