With painstaking stop-motion animation-and shifting of the action to 20th century fascist Italy-director Guillermo del Toro delivered a dark and diverting read on the Collodi classic unlike any before, as the grief-stricken Geppetto (voided by David Bradley) crafted a pine effigy (Gregory Mann) of the 10-year-old son he lost-and which, after being incredibly imbued with life, would come to learn of humanity.
