Glaschu is the new studio album from urban Gael, now highland resident, Mary Ann Kennedy. Dedicated to Glasgow, the album features songs and poetry celebrating life in Glasgow from the past and present. Mary Ann's debut solo album, 'An Dàn', confirmed her place as a composer and songwriter as well as performer, released on ARC to critical acclaim in July 2017. She writes InchI grew up in the southside of Glasgow, in a city rich in languages and cultures, and as part of Scottish Gaels' biggest urban diaspora. It was something of a strange and wonderful upbringing for me and my sister, feeling part of a big community but at the same time- in terms of peers at least- sometimes feeling like the only Gaels in the village. Things change, and it's a joy to see today at the bottom of the street where I grew up, one of Glasgow's three Gaelic schools. You can take the girl out of Glasgow, but never Glasgow out of the girl, and in the spirit of Gaels' eternal need to sing about home, this is my Gaelic love-song for the city in all it's guises- the voices of arrivals in search of a new life and of those, like me, born and bred there with Gaelic as our first language.Inch Album Tracks 1. This compilation of early jazz and ragtime dates from a very early recording (Eli Green's Cakewalk from 1898) to the 1920s. The sources are from pianola rolls, 78 rpm records and phonograph cylinders. The rolls on this recording were played on an Orchestrelle player attachment 65/88 note made around 1905. The first known player is thought to be the 1863 Furneaux 'Pianista.' As with the Orchestrelle this operated by striking the keys of an ordinary piano. The main difference was that it was operated by a handle in the manner of a street piano, while the later instrument is worked pneumatically by foot operated bellows. Early rolls were 58 and later 65 note. 88 notes became standard in the 1900s although the earlier sizes continued to be made. It was some years before manufacturers got together and standardized roll size and fitting so that any player could play any roll. Album Tracks 1. Skip Along (Cakewalk) 2. Pussyfoot March 3. The Revolt of the Brotherhoods Military Music and Culture in 16th Century Europe. Music and war have been linked together since time immemorial. This relationship can be traced from the simple drum and bugle calls performed by army musicians at the height of battle, to communicate orders or to engender courage (or fear) in the combatants, to the more elaborate pieces composed to instil patriotism, such as military marches, songs of victory and compositions for triumphal parades, staged works and dances such as choreographed sword dances. In the religious sphere the impact of war, always wrapped in a solemn, moralizing tone, has been similarly noteworthy. This has led to an impressive repertoire of music associated with funeral services for fallen heroes (Requiem masses), thanksgiving celebrations (Te Deum, military masses, etc) and even the expressive Holy Week musical repertoire based on Jeremiah's Book of Lamentations, which relates the story of the siege and destruction of the city of Jerusalem after falling into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar II in 587 B. C. The musical practices associated with military culture range, therefore, from the sacred to the profane, from the privacy within four walls to the open city streets and from strictly military action to the pleasures of the brothel or street celebrations.
