A: Hello CSPEAKER, Thank you for the question! Yes, The center shelves can be removed! With the center shelves removed, the dimensions of the middle are are: 15-1/8" D x 18-1/4" H x about 30" W. A: Hi Emo, The back panels of this item are made of High-Grade MDF. They are thinner pieces than the rest, and the middle portion you're talking about is screwed into place towards the end of set up. We wouldn't recommend cutting into it, but it could easily be left off during assembly. Please let us know if you have any other questions!
A: Hi Pete, Great question and sorry for any confusion. The depth of the entire console is 17 7/8", including any overhang on the top piece. The shelves are all listed at 15 1/8" deep. You can see in the main image that the shelves stop just short of the front of the console. There is a little bit of extra space beyond the shelf. But likely not enough for 16.5", or else the doors will not be able to fully close in the middle section. Let us know if you have any other questions.
