Originally released a year after the increasingly iconic The Disintegration Loops, a decade later Melancholia still stands as William Basinski's second most beloved album. To commemorate it's 10-year anniversary, we presented the first-ever vinyl edition of this otherworldly piece of music. Remastered from the original recordings and pressed onto audiophile-quality 100% pure virgin vinyl, this limited-edition vinyl reissue is packaged in a gorgeous old-style tip-on gatefold jacket featuring all-new artwork by James Elaine. It is truly a sight and sound to behold. Like many of Basinski's most soul-stirring works, Melancholia began as a series of short tape loops captured in the early 1980s. Basinski then stored them away for decades, revisiting them at a different time in his life, at which point they took on a stunning new sound all their own - one that many consider to be among the finest of this century. Music for Intersecting Planes marks the first collaborative between cellist Leila Bordreuil and organist Kali Malone. Minimal in means yet expansive in effect, the music unfolds like beads on a thread, punctuated by silence and deep breaths. Shifting currents of air pressure emerge from the manually pumped organ, enriched by the cello's finely drawn harmonics to form a microscopic and granular perspective of timbre. Interference patterns spin the sound mass as Malone and Bordreuil play against the stillness of sine waves. Church bells ring in the distance. Undulating feedback gives rise to insistent calls from the organ before yielding to a tragic cello motif. The album then closes with the brief and jubilant pizzicato exclamation, InchEndless Dance of Eternal Joy.InchRecorded by candlelight at the Temple de SaintThéoduoe in La Tour-de-Peilz in Switzerland, the music balances patience and intensity, composition and chance, severity and tenderness. In this collaboration, new facets of both artists come to light Bordreuil's playing with heightened tonal and formal clarity, and Malone's organ work in it's most raw and textural form.
