In the wake of post punk and new wave mania of the 70s and 80s, UK bands throughout the 90s would continue to adore the bright, flourishing guitar riffs of these sounds. As the rise of electronic dance music began, small yet thriving circles of bands were stripping back their sounds as much as possible, as an antidote to the technology integrated society surrounding them. Melodies became simple and lyrics became naive as the bare bones of what people liked in music was celebrated. The 90s would see the rise of independent labels and fanzine creators who were starting to seize the means and champion the scene within the scene, away from the majors. One of the most prominent underground labels of this time was the Bristol based 'Sarah Records', birthed by a pair of fanzine and flexidisc enthusiasts, they championed the sound of many bands who just wanted to write fun, catchy, pop songs for people to enjoy. As Sarah's scope grew, the world at large was becoming more connected, bands far and wide were also tapping into these sounds. Aberdeen were founded in LA, California A place detached from the 'Sarah' scene, yet a place in which the luscious guitar tones and summery riffs of twee pop feel more suited than overcast British suburbia. Helmed by John Girus and Beth Arzy, the duo amassed a tight yet blissful discography of EPs and albums of beautifully melodic, melancholic and dreamy songs fully enveloping the cliche topics of summer sunshine, young love, and the lack thereof. The band's first EP 'Byron' released in 1994 on Sarah was slated at the time by critics. InchWhat dull lives they must lead. Aberdeen ought to... get a couple of Es down their necksInch to quote Melody Maker A prime example of the boisterous, hedonistic raver mentality in which music was consumed at the time, that these bands were shying away from. They followed up that same year with the 'Firework

Around the Fur the follow-up to Deftones' passionate, aggressive Adrenaline, sees the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work, adding new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. The opening InchMy Own Summer (Shove It),Inch serves as an introduction to the album's sonic theme sinewy guitars and eerie whispers alternate with fast, violent crunch. Sepultura's Max Cavallero contributes guitar and vocals to InchHeadup,Inch while InchMXInch finds singer Chino trading off vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, (wife of Deftones' drummer Abe) in an acerbic take on the rock star mentality. Vocal acrobat Moreno attacks a variety of styles his breathy, psychotic recitations sound downright industrial, while the album's calmer, more brooding moments show his gift for haunting melody. Behind him, guitarist Stephen Carpenter's heavy wall of sound is astoundingly muscular, yet inspiringly agile. When Deftones' hellish fury hits full tilt, as it always does on this album, Moreno's voice erupts into screams which are best described as otherworldly, transforming this intense musical firestorm into a hurtling juggernaut of aggression.
