    Synopsis

    A League of Their Own
The All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League was founded in 1943, when most of the men of baseball-playing age were far away in Europe and Asia fighting World War II. The league flourished until after World War II, when, with the men's return, the league was consigned to oblivion. Director Penny Marshall and screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel re-create the wartime era when women's baseball looked to stand a good chance of sweeping the country. The story begins as a candy-bar tycoon enlists agents to scour the country to find women who could play ball. In the backwoods of Oregon, two sisters -- Dottie (Geena Davis) and Kit (Lori Petty) -- are discovered. Dottie can hit and catch, while Kit can throw a mean fastball. The girls come to Chicago to try out for the team with other prospects that include their soon-to-be-teammates Mae Mordabito (Madonna), Doris Murphy (Rosie O'Donnell), and Marla Hooch (Megan Cavanagh). The team's owner, Walter Harvey (Gary Marshall) needs someone to coach his team and he picks one-time home-run champion Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), who is now a broken-down alcoholic. After a few weeks of training, as Dugan sobers up, the team begins to show some promise. By the end of the season, the team has improved to the point where they are competing in the World Series (which is no big deal, since there are only four teams in the league). ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

I've never been a sports guy, not sure why but baseball and football and especially basketball are boring to me. However, this film is so full of charm and humor and memorable characters/moments/quotes that I can't help but love it! During WWII many men head to Europe to fight for freedom and justice leaving their wives, sisters, girlfriends, etc. in America to try to carry on the American dream. People are worried and so a women's baseball league is started to distract those at home from what may or may not be happening to their loved ones overseas. The movie focuses on the Rockford Peaches and their coach, a washed up drunk named Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) who could careless about the girls on his team until they melt his heart. They play baseball but the movie humorously shows us their relationships forming, growing, breaking, and carrying on in a time of war and uncertainty. I'm making this sound way more dramatic than it is, its super fun and hilarious! I haven't seen all the bonus features but even if they were terrible the movie itself is worth the price of the disc on it's own.

This is a great movie at a great price and assuming you don't already have it in your collection, this should be an easy decision for you. If you already have the previous Blu-ray, this version doesn't offer much more except for a short retrospective featurette and the original trailer. (Both of which were enough for me to spend the extra 10 bucks on the "upgrade.") What I found to be disappointing though, was the fact that I couldn't find any copies on the shelf even though the Best Buy website said that my store at four in stock. When I asked someone about it, they went to the back of the store and dug one up for me which I appreciated but they came back with one that had no slipcover. I was disappointed but decided not to make a big deal about it. I happened to come back to the store a few days later for something else and I couldn't help but notice that the other three copies made it on the shelf and all three of them had slipcovers.

This movie still to this day is so enjoyable and looks amazing on Blu-ray. Tom Hanks is amazing as always and plays well off all the female baseball players. Geena Davis is gorgeous as always but this is definitely one of Madonna's best acting roles, Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell play off each other extremely well and I give credit to Madonna for actually poking fun at her stage persona with some great one liners. Lori Petty plays the younger sister to Geena Davis' character and I have always been a fan of hers. Jon Lovitz will have you in stitches. How anyone can not like this movie I will never know, it just makes you feel good and makes you laugh. And yes all the actresses played actual baseball in the movie, no stand ins were used and Madonna has a awesome Jitterbug scene just proving what an amazing dancer she is. I promise you won't be disappointed, you must pick up this amazing movie on blu-ray. Penny Marshall is an amzing director

A League of Their Own is a fantastic film. It really paints a portrait of how life was like for women back then (and to some extent now) and brings up a topic that I never knew about, which is women's baseball was put together as a distraction for WWII. The film and its cast is great as is the picture, audio and special features. If there's one feature I definitely recommend, it's the retrospective. I think that it's intriguing that when the film came out, everyone believed that women in Hollywood would be treated fairly and that everything would change. It didn't and it's a topic that they talk about at length.

I have loved this movie since it came out in the theaters and have been wanting to see it recently. It is still great and this was the best deal for the Bluray and digital copy under $10! The Special Features are insightful as far as giving more of a glimpse into how the film came together, the industry politics, the people it was based on and the training the actresses had to go through as well as some plot twists that were removed from the film. You will laugh, you will cry. even though there is no crying in baseball.

One of my favorite movies. As soon as I saw the chance to buy a 25th anniversary copy, I had no reservations in making a purchase. Besides, since it was a 25th anniversary copy, I believed the Blu-Ray would be clear and improved. To my disappointment, the movie quality is not good. I looks as if they made a copy of a VHS copy. Still a great movie, but would not have made purchase if I had known ahead of time of the poor quality.

I had this movie on DVD but wanted it on bluray for sometime now and made the move with the anniversary edition. Besides getting a better picture, the extra features are great. The movie itself is great. Loved all the characters especially Tom Hanks and Gena Davis. A great story too. How close it really was to real life I don't know, but it felt like it was. I would recommend this to fans of the game as well as history buffs. You will enjoy it.
