Q: Can you download books from Amazon and be able to access them to read without internet and/or wifi?
A: If you download a book, it should appear in your Kindle library and you can access it without any connection. One nice feature that I discovered is that since I have the Kindle app on my Samsung 7 phone and my PC, as well as the new Kindle Fire, I can access the library from any device. The best part is that they are synced so I don't lose my place no matter which device I read it on last.

A: Yes, this model is compatible with all of those applications.
Q: Can you use this if you don't have internet in your home?
A: I download my books using the public library's wifi. Then read the books at home where I do not have internet access.

Q: Should I buy the 16GB or the 32GB
A: Depends on how much you want to store directly on your Kindle. I have a 16gb, but also a good size micro sd card which suits my needs just fine.
