good movie but no digital copy as advertised
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The version that Best Buy sent has blu ray and dvd but no digital copy/code. This is a major reason for getting this movie and as a result, I am very disappointed in this purchase. If you want a digital copy, save yourself the time and don't buy it from Best Buy

Amy Adams is terrific in "American Hustle"
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I usually watch movies with little or no suspense regarding character's motivations. Amy Adam's performance in American Hustle had me questioning her loyalties at least twice, shifting from Bale's Irving Rosenfeld to Cooper's Richie DiMaso and back again. A great performance with plenty of nuance.

One of the most enjoyable films of 2013
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. One thing that can really elevate a film is to have a great ensemble cast. It’s not often that a movie gets Oscar-nominated for all 4 acting awards (Best Actor/Actress & Supporting Actor/Actress). Director David O. Russell’s SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK did it in 2013 and in 2014 his film AMERICAN HUSTLE did it again, so he must be doing something right to pull off such a rare feat. The movie is loosely based on the ABSCAM scandal, but instead of just making a standard thriller, Russell is more interested in fleshing out the interesting characters caught in this desperate situation. ARGO was also based on a true story and won Best Picture the previous year, but I’d argue that AMERICAN HUSTLE is a better movie and is much more conducive to repeated viewings. AMERICAN HUSTLE was a whole lot of fun and is one of the movies from 2013 that I’m most likely to watch again and again. As a woman who has tried to reinvent herself to conceal her more humble beginnings, Amy Adams would have been a very strong contender for best actress had it not been for Cate Blanchett in BLUE JASMINE, a much less enjoyable film (sadly, Brie Larson was overlooked for her great work in SHORT TERM 12). Christian Bale is great as the charismatic pot-bellied con man and its fun to watch Bradley Cooper’s character struggle when his character is out of his depth, but its wildcard Jennifer Lawrence as Bale’s housewife who really shakes things up and has the potential to derail everyone else’s plans through her careless, clueless actions. It is one’s intentions which matter the most according to her, regardless of the possible consequences fo doing blatantly stupid things. She did a great job here as an unusual type of character and only lost the Oscar because Lupita Nyongo did such an amazing job in 12 YEARS A SLAVE. Jeremy Renner does a good job at a difficult task: playing a politician who’s actually quite likeable and honestly seems to be trying to do something in his constituents’ best interests instead of just trying to increase his own bank account. Being a new movie, the Blu-ray transfer looks beautiful as expected and professional reviewers have described the picture and sound quality as flawless. The extras include deleted/extended scenes and a making-of segment.

A true Story done the David O Russell way.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really, really enjoyed this movie. It's inspired by real life life events. That means it's not a biopic, it takes a real event and dramatizes it. I have found myself a big fan of David O. Russell after this and Silver Linings Playbook. It does tell a story so it's not a rom-com (thank god) or a Jason Statham fast paced shoot em up or big explosion type movie (not that those are bad). If you life a good sting type movie with great acting this is for you. The opening is great and by the middle you wonder who is working who. I loved it. It was a thinker. I was not alive during the time period this took place so I have no recollection of anything to do with the actual case. It does have a great soundtrack. I recommend watching it if these are your type of movie. Another heads up, if you are seeing this movie only for Jennifer Lawrence her part is not huge however she is great! I have not watched all the bonus features so that's the four star, also I was sad there was no gag reel. I always love those.

Best Movie of 2013
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What's not to like? Great acting, screenplay, direction, soundtrack, etc. The reason I think people have a problem with it is that it was nominated by the Golden Globes in the wrong category: this is DRAMA which has some very funny moments, as all good dramas do. In fact, it begins with one. In any good drama the comedy is there to relieve the tension, which is necessary. Another thing I've run across is that too many people don't like to think when they watch a movie: they want it handed to them. If that's what you want, this is not the film for you. I even read one review that complained about the costumes because the person claimed they weren't authentic: unfortunately, some people did dress that way. I know because I lived during the period in question- don't believe me? Watch "Saturday Night Fever"! Halston even let them use some of his originals from the period for the film! There are so many great performances, plot twists, and enough to enjoy about this film to make it well worth watching. I still don't understand why it didn't win a single Academy Award, especially when did win other major awards.

David O. Russell back in form
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have long felt David O. Russell was one of our best new directors but was unappreciated. Post I Heart Huckabees he really struggled to get a film made and it took ages for him to kind of sell out and do Oscar bait like The Fighter. Though the Fighter wasn't very Russel-ish it did put him back in good standing where the public finally became aware of what a talent he is. He could then be in a better position to get proper Russell films made like American Hustle (messed up selfish narcissistic characters). I mean he's had a renaissance of appreciation over 3 films but Joy might have just jeopardized it. BTW Jennifer Lawrence is great in this movie but someone please notify him that there are other actresses on this planet not named Jennifer Lawrence.
