Two Czechoslovakian soldiers (Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy) parachute into Bohemia in 1942 on a dangerous mission: They must assassinate SS officer Reinhard Heydrich, leader of the Nazi forces controlling their country. The men are assigned two women (Charlotte Le Bon and Anna Geislerová) to pose as their lovers so as not to arouse suspicion in public, but they are soon overwhelmed by nervousness and fear over the importance of their assignment. Toby Jones co-stars. Based on true events, Anthropoid (the title comes from Operation Anthropoid, the official code name for the assassination attempt) was directed by Sean Ellis.~Jack Rodgers
This movie seems to have gotten lost at the multiplex this summer in the midst of kid friendly animated stuff and the latest comic book movies, but it happens to be the best war film released this year. Perhaps because the protagonists aren't Americans it got overlooked. A look at a group of Czech partisans during the earlier phase of World War 2 and their attempt to assassinate the leading SS official in the territory. The price of resistance ends up being very high indeed. Shot on film, the blu-ray presents the image impeccably well, and the gun shots ring out with deafening authority on the soundtrack. Definitely a must see.
I watched this the other night. I have seen the same story in the form of a documentary. this movie was pretty good (except for the bad mission outcome).
I liked the performances by the main characters, depicting the young age and inexperience of the young men of the time fighting for the survival of their culture and country.
i prefer to watch period, or war-era movies due to extreme human dynamics placed upon all individuals involved. these movies bring out the most human and inhumane, true characteristics we all have.
So, this gift was a very good one, indeed!
I'm not of the Jewish persuasion but learned of the Holocaust from a Jewish friend at a very young age. I'm a history buff and little has been documented in film about the Czech resistance so it was good to learn of this film. It is valuable in that sense and while the film does this, the inhumanity of The Final Solution is still inconceivable to me on an emotional level. I know it happened but I still struggle to comprehend that level of unjustifiable hatred.
I would recommend this to a friend

Sad Ending - But Real & Good
Learned a lot about aspects of WWII that I had not seen or heard of before, so this was a good learning experience. As well, it was a good entertaining move. But - as it went along it was a bit predictable. Was very well acted/directed etc and quite realistic - especially as for the types and usage of the weapons from that time period.
I liked this movie so much. It was hard to watch, as are all war movies.
But it was done so well and those few people were SUCH HEROES.
I was not at all familiar with this story. I was kind of surprised, as I've watched a lot of WWII movies. I appreciated the richness of the scenery, costumes, and mostly, the characters.
I love history and enjoyed watching this valuable movie based on actual events during WWII. Movie was well done and acting was real. One must give it patience during viewing as the storyline develops slowly. It reaches a horrific climax and conclusion. I really enjoyed the movie enough to add it to my collection.
This film was great when it came to depicting how the assassination was carried out. However, there should have been more background about the heinousness of Heydrich and why it was a good idea to assassinate him.
