I don’t know what these other people are thinking giving this set 1 star. This is a fantastic release, and easily the best this show has ever looked AND sounded. First of all, to those of you who thought this would somehow be widescreen.. you clearly do not understand what it would take to make that happen. The entire series was drawn and composed for a 4:3 frame (that means black bars on the left and right). So not only would expanding it to widescreen 16:9 ruin the original intended composition for the series, but it would be near impossible because it would require every frame of the series to be redrawn at the wider aspect ratio. You think Nickelodeon has the time, money, and projected sales numbers to justify re-animating all 3 seasons of Avatar? That’s absurd. Secondly, the series was animated in 480p, yep that’s standard definition. And the original DVDs look like garbage thanks to various visual artifacts and bad compression. The remaster they did here was the absolute best they could do given the source material. Even the Fan Remaster from the past couple years doesn’t quite hit the fidelity captured here, and it only gets close by applying some visual filters that alter the visual style of the series (thinner lines = sharper). This blu-ray looks great for what it is, and to expect it to look as clean and crisp as modern day animation is simply outrageous. Finally, this is the first time the audio for ATLA has been released in such good quality (Lossless DTS-HD 2.0 stereo). That should be a selling point by itself! It sounds great and NO it’s not surround because that’s never how the series was originally mixed. I’m just thankful that Nickelodeon didn’t cater to the ignorant and crop the series to widescreen and poorly upmix the stereo to surround just to please people who have no idea what they’re talking about. Also this blu-ray set includes all the original special features. It’s just a great deal. Go buy it if you love the series.

Excellent Show & Best Quality Out

I am going to break my review down based on possible customer circumstances. For people with the DVD ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This version has three discs per season (9 total) instead of the usual 16 total discs from the DVD set. So you don't have to change out discs as often. The picture quality is better. There are comparison shots of the DVD/Stream/Blu-Ray out there on the Internet. The audio is better, at least according to some audiophiles out there (I am not). Downside is that it is still 4:3 aspect ratio. Which means there is still black bars on the side. It isn't possible to get the show in widescreen without re-drawing/re-animating the entire show. So in this regard, if you don't mind changing out more discs and aren't picky about picture quality, then you can stick with the DVDs. Customers without the DVDs but have access to streams: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Same as DVD's except the changing of disc issue. Also, if your Internet goes down or the stream service stops showing the show, you would be out of luck. So in my opinion, its a must buy still. Customers without the DVDs and streams: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What are you waiting for? Get it!

Extreme upgrade from old DVD set - worth buying

So, despite what a lot of other people are saying on here, this new Blu-Ray set is a massive step up from the original DVD release of Avatar the Last Airbender. Frankly I don't think many of the bad reviewers really understand the differences between this set and the old one. The DVD version was compressed, leaving the images grainy, fuzzy, and bad looking, and the audio quality was terrible. Oftentimes it sounded like the voice actors were talking through a fan, and it didn't even match up with the visuals on screen. Many fans were disappointed with the quality of the original release and have been waiting for an upgrade, and this is it. It's finally here! This Blu-Ray release looks amazing in comparison, like it did when it was originally aired on TV, albeit a bit sharper in image quality. Given the original quality that the show was produced in, this is as "HD" as it can get, and it looks great. They fixed all of the original release issues and this is how the show was meant to look. To sum this up: The full DVD set would be a waste of your time because it's so absolutely flawed. Definitely spend the money on this Blu-Ray set, it's worth every penny of it.

Better than DVD and streaming, but not by much

I got about exactly what I expected, but I wasn't expecting much. A blu ray release of about the same quality as streaming sites. All episodes are up-res'd and smoothed out to 1080p, moreso and higher quality than streamed episodes off of Amazon or Nick.com, and are still in their original letterbox aspect ratio (aka not widescreen). Despite that it does look better, the difference is not night and day. In fact, it can sometimes look slightly worse. It looks like they upscaled it to 1080p and just used a default smoothing filter to rid the picture of low res aliasing without any touch-ups in some scenes. I hesitate to say worse though, as that immediately sounds bad and that isn't necessarily the case, it just might take a little bit to get used to. Probably the oddest thing about this set is it comes with a whopping 9 blu for all 4 books, 3 for each book. The special features are spread throughout all 9 discs. Despite it's drawbacks, it's still the highest quality version of the show you can watch. If you have the DVD set, this isn't worth it and save your money. And unless you aren't a big fan or avid about having physical releases, perhaps wait for a sale to around $35 or cheaper.

    Only an Upconvert

While this might be a good price for the whole collection of a fantastic show in you do not already own it, do not expect the visual fidelity associated with Blu-Ray movies. I was very excited to have one of my favorite series release on Blu-Ray with the expectation that it would be a crisp, widescreen, HD version. Unfortunately, it is only a 4:3 upconvert with only a slight improvement in quality over the DVD release. While this is not too suprising, it is especially disappointing considering the packaging and menu presentation. The case naturally lists the format as "1080p High Definition" and the discs themselves are labeled "Widescreen". Sadly, it is really only the Disc Menus that are HD (well, and the anti-piracy warnings...). It is a large letdown to see the crisp, HD menu, with widescreen icons in the episode selection, followed by the lackluster upconvert. (And the special features only seem to be in SD.) For now, my hopes for a beautiful high definition release of Avatar, The Last Airbender have fallen below those for an HD release of the Theatrical cut of Star Wars.

A Major Upgrade from the DVDs

I’m thrilled with this set. Having just watched the DVDs multiple times over the past few years, I don’t see how anyone could see this as anything less than a major upgrade. The double-line blurring throughout Book 1 is fixed, and the audio is clearer by far than it has ever been. I feel anyone reviewing this upgrade negatively must be comparing the quality with something modern, like Korra. From someone who has both streamed the show and viewed it on multiple DVD sets: this is simply the best it has ever looked (or probably will look considering it was animated in the pre-HD, pre-widescreen standard days. And there aren’t any original film negatives to go back to for shows like this.) This is it. And I, for one, am SO greatful they made this upgrade, preserving the show in the best possible light. I’ll be gifting this series to loved the ones for as long as they sell it- and THIS is without a doubt the best version available.

    No avatar extras

The show was good quality it’s the best I’ve been able to find it at. But I doesn’t really feel “blu ray” And it’s still square. And I understand that it would be very hard to make it widescreen with out making it all look weird. But what I really wanna know is how you can advertise this as “the complete series” but not have any of the avatar extras. I can’t explain how much of a let down that was. Also a small complaint, this isn’t about the show, more “Blu-ray” in general. Why..... Why in the world do I need 9 disks to watch 1 show. These are not floppy disks I shouldn’t need a handful. I have the entire series of avatar on my computer in 720p and it’s only 18gb that mean this box set can’t be more then 50gb and blu-ray disks have 25gb storage per disk. So why isn’t this show on 2 disks? Or maybe 3 disks one per season. That makes sense. 9 disks... now that’s just stupid.

I am one of the biggest fans of the Avatar: The Last Airbender series. I honestly believe that it is one of the best animated shows of all time. That being said, it saddens me that I have spent even more money on this "blu ray" set when all it really is is a DVD upconvert. The images are grainly, blurry, and the audio is muddled. Not at all what I was expecting from a blu ray. I also own the Dragonball Z collection on blu ray. Dragonball Z was given proper treatment. Yes the images were zoomed in to create a wide screen view, but the images were restored and stunning. This "blu ray" set has none of that. I honestly believe that my DVD set is just as good. If you don't currently own the set, do yourself a favor and save some money by buying the DVDs!
