    Synopsis

    Better Off Dead
Most animation aficionados of the 1990s know "Savage Steve Holland" as the cocreator (with Bill Kopp) of the all-stops-out TV cartoon series Eek! The Cat. But Holland had been exercising his own peculiar brand of deviltry on live characters long before Eek! came into being. In Holland's Better Off Dead, John Cusack plays a lovestruck teenager, hopelessly enamored with Amanda Wyss. When she dumps him in favor of a more popular high-schooler, the boy's entire day quickly goes to Hell. In the words of Hamlet, all occasions do inform against Cusack: he is bullied, tormented and torn apart by everyone from the paperboy (who seemingly turns up everywhere) to the disembodied voice of a radio deejay. Cusack attempts suicide, but his efforts are just as unsuccessful-and amusing-as Bud Cort's in Harold and Maude. Meanwhile, French exchange student Diane Franklin, held a virtual prisoner by her host family, develops a long-distance crush on Cusack. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

It's a decent 1080p tansfer. I have the DVD, a 4k player and 4k TV with high quality hdmi cables so i can compare these intelligently. I was stoked to see that it was on blu-ray. Compared to the dvd, the blu-ray is brighter and more crisp upscaled to 4k from the blu-ray source vs dvd. The DVD was a little more dull, and the colors weren't as vibrant. Honestly, I prolly could've lived with it, but the blu-ray is worth it if you're a fan of this film. The audio is a lot better than DVD. I was expecting to be completely wowed to see this film in blu-ray 1080p upscaled to 4k, but it was just decently better not phenomenally better (like the princess bride on dvd vs blu-ray. THAT is a massive an worthy upgrade). Don't expect to be blown away, and you will be ok. It is not a HUGE improvement over the DVD, but it is still noticeably better. Especially the audio. Worth the dineiro if you are a fan of this film. I got it on sale for $9.99 at my local best buy. Best price I could find on it anywhere.

It's 1985, and Savage Steve Holland takes a delightful look at teen dating, teen breakups and the effect both have on young adults. His study is a very young John Cusack and his obsessive crush on the ultimate blonde idiot, Beth, who only finds him attractive until she falls for the school ski director, and resident bully. Beth, who is played very well by Amanda Wyss, shallow as she is, decides to break up with John's character Lane, as calmly as she picks her hair spray. Thus begins Lane's decent into hilarious attempts at suicide and trying to win her back. Holland's directional and writing debut is a little rough, but very real and keeps you watching to the very end. The end, where Lane discovers that there is life after Beth.

This is one of my favorite 80's movies....and John Cusack was one of those actors who made these movies so good. (Some of his other great 80's movies are One Crazy Summer, The Sure Thing, Sixteen Candles(small role),and Say Anything). I quote this movie all the time....."Gee I'm sorry your mom blew up Ricky"......"Two Dollars"........."that's a real shame when folks be throwin' away a perfectly good white boy like that" Just classic stuff. I own this on DVD but will now add the BluRay to my collection and hopefully there are more extras on it.

Sleeper comedy, its one of those movies that if you saw it in the 80s, you want to watch it now that your an adult. Find someone that has seen it and you immediately say lines like "I want my 2 dollars" or laugh about the French dinner... If I had not gotten it, and showed it to my kids, odds are they would not have seen it, as it has not gotten popular as some of the other 80s movies have, which is a shame... I grabbed it during the DVD upgrade program, so got this extremely cheap, that made this purchase easy!

Better off dead is one of my personal favorite comedies with not enough people who know or talk about this film. I have always thought john cusack has had some OK to bad films but so far I have enjoyed him in The Frozen Ground and this( I have not seen say anything yet). This movie was made for TV and has a lot of cheesy parts in the film but I smile every time I watch this its a funny underrated picture that deserves to be watched. I highly recommend this.

I love that it was so easy to find this movie when I got to the store. I only spent about 2 minutes or less finding the DVD I was looking for. Everything was organized and set up in a way that you could see everything without having to dig around. Once I found my DVD I was able to check out just as quickly. I was in and out of the store with in maybe seven minutes. The movie was excellent, my whole family enjoyed it.

Better Off Dead redefined the 80's heartbreak and revenge film. The added animation gives it a unique twist to it's humor. John Cusack is fresh and in command as the star of the movie with an amazing supporting cast. Great soundtrack also! This is an essential part of any 80's movie collection.

This film is great and is one of my favorite comedies of all time. The DVD has absolutely no special features -- the closest it comes is a small paragraph on the back of the DVD's case that says the film is semi-autobiographical and that the director made depressing films that made his friends laugh. Highly recommended.
