Darkman [DVD] [1990]

  • SKU: 3346864
  • Release Date: 03/31/1998

Director Sam Raimi brings to life a comic book-like superhero and frantic camera work in the action-adventure comedy Darkman. Universal has done a great job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. While the image sometimes suffers from some small amounts of grain and dirt, overall, this picture looks very crisp with vivid colors and even black levels. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround in English and French, sounding much better than expected. While the mix is limited to only the front and center speakers, the bulk of this soundtrack has a very bombastic and explosive feel to it. Also included on this disc are subtitles in Spanish and English captions. Extra features are relatively scant -- the only supplements available on this disc are some thin production notes, a few bios on the cast and crew, and a single theatrical trailer for the movie.

Neglecting Julie (Frances McDormand), his lawyer lady friend, Dr. Peyton Westlake (Liam Neeson) works feverishly to perfect his latest invention -- artificial skin that could be used to treat burn victims. Peyton himself falls victim to an explosion when one of Julie's crooked clients sends his henchmen to sniff out an incriminating document that's been left in Westlake's lab. Hideously disfigured and left for dead, the good doctor receives an experimental medical treatment that renders him super-strong, impervious to pain and prone to heightened fits of rage. Rebuilding his lab into an underground hideout, Westlake begins using his synthetic skin to impersonate various characters and engineer his revenge against those who destroyed his life. Reconnecting with Julie, however, becomes the unsightly vigilante's biggest challenge. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi

      Darkman a Blast.

This movie is a straight up guilty pleasure that held some originality for itself in 1990 putting every action-movie trick in the book. Liam Nesson plays a skin-graft bio-chemist slain and left for dead by gangsters only to use his facial graft technology to impersonate any man he wants and revenge on his killers. Directed by Sam Raimi of 'Spiderman' thru 'Spiderman 3' early 2000, and with Frances Mcdormand before 'Fargo' and 'Transformers 3'- Liam Neeson shows particular action chops before 'Taken' and hams it up as the tortured hero. A movie to any fan of the talents listed.

Sequels may come and go, but this original DARKMAN is a terrific dark, gory superhero blast before R rated super hero movies were a thing. Shout Factory did a great job with the bonus features, but the transfer is lacking (not really any better than the original Universal disc). Still, this is easily the version most worth adding ti your collection. Get it now!

      Not what I expected

I thought I had remembered this being a good movie from "back in the day", so I bought it. I hadn't watched it in several years and couldn't believe how cheesy it was. Liam Neeson's acting was sub par, and the whole thing was just campy. I ended up watching it to the end, hoping it would get better, which it didn't, and I ended up giving it to Goodwill.

      Great B-Movie

This is a great sci-fi action B-flick that is sure to please fans of the genre. The anamorphic widescreen presentation is acceptable, but the complete lack of bonus features for this film is not. Taking into consideration that this movie really helped boost Sam Raimi's career, I'm quite surprised a special edition has never surfaced.

Solid comic book esque movie about a man wronged and out for revenge. Sam Raimi's most overlooked movie. Stay away from the sequels!
