While the newest series of Doctor Who taking over the role of the Doctor was certainly controversial, this New Year’s Day episode may be the start of show getting back on track. The series itself , while good, did not have much in terms of memorable new or classic monsters. In many ways, that makes it difficult for longtime fans to hop on the 13th Doctor’s bandwagon. However, Resolution features her battling her longtime enemy the Daleks. The threat level can be felt and it feels like Jodie Whitaker as the new Incarnation of the Doctor has finally begun to settle into the character. Hopefully this will continue with the new series that is currently in production as Jodie is an amazing actor who deserves a chance to shine as our favorite timelord.
The episode was so-so for 13th doctor with a good premise undermined by the lousy writing that has infected recent seasons. Solid set up of a dangerous talisman split into three pieces in prologue offered useful questing potential scenarios ala some recent Avenger films. However that seemed to almost immediately be forgotten and the only foray was a meaningless snow covered confrontation plagued by a laughable depiction of the collision of two projectiles. The 1970's special effects were campy but fun, this was just sloppy as was the writing. I like Dr. Who and have no problem with a female lead, but miss Mr. Moffat. Better to go see some of the classic episodes and hope for improvements going forward.
