This film got terrible reviews...plain and simple. Why? Because it wasn't aimed at film critics ...at all. The film is an experiment in teen flicks along the lines of "The Breakfast Club" it chronicles the lives of a bunch of angst y, depressed, manic teens over the course of a single day, finding odd little ways to tell each of their stories. It definitely accomplishes this goal, using "Rex Manning Day" as the vehicle for delivering half a dozen life stories without telling a boring narrative. Granted, it's doesn't have the most original plot, or Oscar caliber acting, but it the film does what it sets out to do, and for this reason, earned its cult following. Watch this film and you will find yourself quoting lines and recalling scenes. If you're looking for a fun romp with a story that will neither bore you, nor tax your mental reserves, this is a great flick--lots of fun, quotable dialogue, and of course, great music. Both Cochrane and Embry give memorable performances as the night manager, turned well meaning felon turned philosopher and the happy go lucky stoner respectively. The story line is a tad incongruous and disjointed and some of the characters are stereotypical in their attempts to shatter the stereotypes, but if you go in to this movie with the expectations that it's just going to be a fun flick, you'll be satisfied.

"Empire Records" was one of my first indie films following Kevin Smith's first couple back in the 90s. It's a story of a day in the life of the employees of a record store and their various ups and downs, trials and tribulations, and a visiting Rock Star after a misunderstanding sends the closing manager Lucas to Atlantic City where he loses all of the store income from the previous day. To tell you more would be doing a disservice to this hilarious ensemble comedy staring Rene Zellweger, Ethan Embry, Robin Tunney, Liv Tyler, Anthony LaPaglia, etc. It's crazy, its not at all serious, and the soundtrack is amazing if you have any love for the 90s alternative rock scene. Best of all this is the original theatrical version, not the Fan Remix extended version. Normally the extended cuts are better and that one is fine but I prefer this version as it's just a bit better paced and moves better. Blu-ray has a series of deleted scenes which was a fun added bonus I hadn't expected before ordering.

all i can say is empire records is a classic movie from 95 bc it has a good cast good story and over all all very good movie from start to finish and it has some very funny parts in it too and well worth owning on blu-ray if you can find it cheap the only bad thing about the blu-ray is not the remix just the theater version i just wish it had both on the blu-ray but the blu-ray is still worth owning so if you are a fan of the movie than check it out

If you like rock music and hanging out in record stores, then you'll love this film! It bombed when it first came out, but it has somewhat of a cult following now. There's a big-name cast including Liv Tyler, Robin Tunney, Renee Zellweger, Ethan Embry and Anthony LaPaglia. Just like any coming-of-age movie, it will make you feel nostalgic for your youth and make you wish you could hang out with your friends and listen to records all day.

I've looked at this movie several times while in best buy, it was a staple of my childhood. BB just never had it on the format I wanted but this time they did . However they only downside I found to this version was the music videos on the bonus features, It needs the Gin Blossom videos instead of Rex Manning

Love this movie. Had it in my VHS collection (don't judge, I got it when it first came out, lol!) So I needed to get again. Not too much to get into, just a great story, excellent characters and a funny hour and a half.

The movie is funny. It isn't the funniest movie of all times but it's pretty decent. With a purchase price of $4.99 and free shipping - it's definitely worth the price and the the time to watch the movie. If you have never seen the movie then I highly recommend buying it.
